JOB PURPOSE
As part of a multidisciplinary team the post holder will have responsibility for
assessment of care needs and the development of programmes of care, and/or the
implementation and evaluation of these programmes ensuring the delivery of high
quality care to neonates and their families

SCOPE AND RANGE
To provide a high quality, safe and supportive environment in order to care for
babies
and their families in the neonatal unit and meet identified needs
Environment of Care
The neonatal intensive care unit provides a regional neonatal service for babies and their
families from throughout Tayside. The neonatal intensive care unit has 21 cots (4 intensive
care, 3 high dependency, 10 special care and 4 transitional care), and 4 transitional care
maternal beds. A neonatal case manager provides primary care liaison and community nursing
support. Neonatal Transport services for the North of Scotland are provided jointly with
Aberdeen. Band 5 staff nurses will work predominately in the high dependency/special care
environment, developing towards working in a supervised/learning capacity in the intensive
care environment.
Supervisory Responsibility
Band 5 nurses will supervise delegated tasks to non-registered nursing staff and students.
They will be required to support orientation of new and rotational staff, acting as a resource to
facilitate their learning and integration to the department.
Budgetary Responsibilities
The post holder has no direct budgetary management responsibilities. However they are
required to be aware of the need to work within budgets and their responsibility to assist in
effective use of resources.

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
 Care Delivery
1. Responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and
evaluation of programmes of care for high dependency/special care babies and their
families whose needs are relatively consistent and stable to ensure delivery of a high
standard of care under the direction of neonatal clinical guidelines
2. Work in partnership with parents/carers to plan and deliver care
3. Maintain effective communication with parents/carers, relatives and other members of the
multidisciplinary team on routine daily activities to ensure that appropriate information is
shared and the needs of babies and their families are met.

Recognise changes in the condition of babies and respond appropriately
5.
Support and involve parents/carers and relatives in planning and delivery of
individualised care
6.
Responsible for maintaining patient records within the agreed standards to ensure the care
management plan is communicated to parents/carers and the healthcare team
7.
Maintain good relationships and a positive approach to families/carers and relatives, refer
them as necessary to a Senior Neonatal Nurse for any questions they may have on their
baby’s condition or any suggestions or complaints that they wish to raise

Comply with policies relating to Child Protection


Co-ordinate and prioritise own workload working as part of a team to ensure that the
interests of babies and their families are met

assistants who are providing care to babies and their families, act as a source of advice to
facilitate the delivery of safe and effective care

COMMUNICATION AND RELATIONSHIPS
Communicates continuously about routine daily activities, with a wide range of health and
social care workers, parents and families. Utilise a wide range of media such as telephone,
verbal and written communications and overcomes any difficulties in communication with
people such as language barriers, clinical conditions (stroke, deafness)
Establish and maintain relationships based on mutual respect, communicating on a regular
basis with the parents/carers, other relatives, the multidisciplinary team and external
agencies involved in the provision of care

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB
Physical Skills:
 Administer intravenous injections and prescribed solutions via syringe pumps and infusion
devices
 Capillary sampling from very preterm infants
 Handling, manoeuvring and positioning low birthweight neonates

Superannuation
The terms and conditions of service for this post are those
determined by the NHS Staff Council.
The current salary scale for the post is £21,602 to £28,180 per
annum (pro rata for part-time staff). Placing on the scale on
appointment is normally at the minimum but may be higher
subject to verification of previous relevant service.
Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.
The hours of the post are 26.25 per week.
Start and finish times will be determined by the needs of the
service.
Membership of the NHS Superannuation Scheme is not
compulsory but is open to all staff between the ages of 16 and
70 (65 in some instances).
The contributions paid are a percentage of superannuable pay,
which is essentially basic pay excluding, for example, overtime
or travelling expenses.
Contribution rates with effect from 01.04.14 are as follows:

Contributions are subject to tax relief and reduced National
Insurance contributions. NHS Tayside also makes a substantial
contribution towards scheme benefits – currently around 14% of

On appointment = 27 days (pro rata for part-time Staff) or 5.4
weeks per year.
After 5 years aggregated service = 29 days (pro rata for part-time
staff) or 5.8 weeks per year
After 10 years aggregated service = 33 days (pro rata for parttime staff) or 6.6 weeks per year

Public Holidays = 8 days (pro rata for part-time staff) or 1.6
