LOCATION
Across the county of Surrey (bordering London – the districts/boroughs of
Elmbridge, Epsom & Ewell, Reigate & Banstead, Spelthorne and Tandridge,
and also Guildford, Mole Valley, Runnymede and Surrey Heath)
Overview
Surrey County Council is working with Waste Watch Services at Keep Britain Tidy to deliver a
campaign in designed to encourage residents to use their food waste collection service. We will be
working in nine of the eleven districts/boroughs across the county of Surrey (Elmbridge, Epsom &
Ewell, Guildford, Mole Valley, Reigate & Banstead, Runnymede, Spelthorne, Surrey Heath and
Tandridge) targeting around 300,000 households with different combinations of interventions
including putting a ‘no food waste’ sticker on the refuse bin and delivering a food waste service
leaflet and food waste caddy/bin liners on collection day. Trials of these interventions in seven other
local authorities by WRAP increased the quantity of food waste collected by between 11% and 48%.
This is therefore an exciting opportunity to be part of a large scale project which will boost food
waste recycling throughout the county of Surrey.
One element of the campaign involves bin stickering and this will take place in the following
districts/boroughs – Elmbridge, Epsom & Ewell, Guildford, Mole Valley, Reigate & Banstead,
Runnymede, Spelthorne and Surrey. Recycling Promoters will work in a pair, led by a Team Leader,
and will cover a different collection round within their allocated district or borough each day. The
round will be covered on foot and will involve working in close proximity to the refuse collection
crew with an associated early morning start. Responsibilities include:



Placing a ‘no food waste’ sticker on all refuse bins placed out for collection
Recording which houses have received their stickers
Meeting daily targets for the number of bins stickered


For one Recycling Promoter in each pair – collecting stickers from a specific Council location
using your own vehicle (mileage reimbursed at a rate of £0.45 per mile)
Assisting other Recycling Promoters with delivery once all the day’s bins have been stickered
– see below
The second element of the campaign involves the delivery of a food waste service leaflet and
caddy/bin liners – these explain the use of the food waste bin to residents and allow them to store
their food waste in a suitable manner. This will take place in the following districts/boroughs –
Elmbridge, Epsom & Ewell, Mole Valley, Reigate & Banstead, Runnymede, Spelthorne, Surrey Heath
and Tandridge. Recycling Promoters will work in a pair and will cover a different collection round of a
district or borough each day on foot working a few hours behind the Recycling Promoters carrying
out bin stickering (therefore an early morning start is not required). Responsibilities include:




Delivering a pack of food waste bin liners and a leaflet to residents – you will be provided
with a rucksack and trolley to transport materials
Recording which properties have received the packs and submitting this to the Project
Manager on a daily basis
Meeting daily targets for the number of packs distributed
For some Recycling Promoters in the team – collecting leaflets and liners from a specific
Council location using your own vehicle (mileage reimbursed at a rate of £0.45 per mile)
Additional responsibilities for the Team Leaders across the bin stickering and delivery activities
include:




Liaising directly with the Project Manager to ensure smooth running of the project
Managing the team on a day to day basis
Organising the team’s daily work plan
Ensuring that daily targets are met across the team
