Overview
Surrey County Council is working with Waste Watch Services at Keep Britain Tidy to deliver an eleven
week campaign in October/November/December 2015 designed to encourage residents to use their
food waste collection service. We will be working in nine of the eleven districts/boroughs across the
county of Surrey (Elmbridge, Epsom & Ewell, Guildford, Mole Valley, Reigate & Banstead,
Runnymede, Spelthorne, Surrey Heath and Tandridge) targeting around 300,000 households with
different combinations of interventions, including putting a ‘no food waste’ sticker on the refuse bin
and delivering a food waste service leaflet and food waste caddy/bin liners on collection day. Trials
of these interventions in seven other local authorities by WRAP increased the quantity of food waste
collected by between 11% and 48%. This is therefore an exciting opportunity to be part of a large
scale project which will boost food waste recycling throughout the county of Surrey.
In Guildford, the campaign involves bin stickering. Recycling Promoters will ride with the refuse
collection crew and will cover a different collection round across the borough each day. The round
will largely be covered on foot and will involve working in close proximity to the refuse collection
crew, with a prompt 6am departure from the Woking Road depot in Guildford. Responsibilities
include:




Placing a ‘no food waste’ sticker on all refuse bins placed out for collection
Recording which houses have received their stickers & reporting this to the Project Manager
Meeting daily targets for the number of bins stickered
Collecting stickers from a specific Council location (the depot) and ensuring the required
number are on the vehicle
The hours of work will vary according to the activity:


Bin stickering: Monday – Friday, a minimum of 6 hours per day (but may be as high as 8.5
hours per day). Fixed start time of 6:00am.
Team Leaders will be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per day to report
information to the Project Manager
