Senior Math Syllabus 2014-2015 Mr. Gingerich Room 102 Email dgingerich@ldsd.org REQUIRED SUPPLIES: 1½” Binder (1) Ruler (1) Scientific Calculator Graph Paper (1 pack) Pencils (12 pack) GRADING Your grade will be based on the following: 40% Tests 35% Quizzes – Announced and Unannounced 25% Homework/Class Participation Final grade is calculated by .89*(overall class grade)+.11*(final exam grade)=final grade Points can be earned from warm-ups, daily individual practice assignments, homework, projects, quizzes and tests. Warm-ups: Warm-ups are like getting prepared to work—clocking in and getting out equipment. Students will do warm-ups on weekly warmup sheets, which are to be kept in folder. These will be checked for completion on a weekly basis and points awarded. Individual Practice Assignments: Assignments will be given on a daily basis. On most days, students should finish these assignments during the class period. Individual practice work will be turned in each class period and graded with the following rubric: 3—mostly correct, all problems attempted 2—More than half attempted, mostly correct 1—Less than half attempted, mostly correct 0—Less than half attempted, mostly incorrect or no attempt * 0 assignments can be redone for extra point with permission. Homework: The teacher reserves the right to give homework as necessary if individual class practice is not sufficient to master skills. Tests/Quizzes: Tests will be given at the conclusion of each unit. Quizzes will be given at the discretion of the teacher, to check for understanding of concepts within each unit. Projects on personal lifestyle topics(budgeting, housing, fitness/nutrition) PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PED) POLICY Lower Dauphin High School allows students to uses PED’s between classes, during lunch, and during study halls. PED’s may be used in my classroom before the start of class. However, all PED’s must be turned off and put away once the late bell rings. PED’s that are either visible to the teacher or in use by the student without the teacher’s permission are a violation of the PED policy. PED’s may be used during classtime only with the direct permission of the teacher. Failure to follow the PED guidelines described above will result in one verbal warning followed by confiscation of the device and disciplinary action by the teacher for each additional offense. I reserve the right to modify these guidelines for any reason at anytime during the school year. ABSENCES Regular attendance in class is necessary to be successful in math. If you must miss class, you should talk to your group about what problems and announcements you missed. Any handouts will be put it in the folder at the front of the room. You are responsible to make up both classwork and homework within the same number of days that you were absent, unless other arrangements have been made with your teacher. In case of an absence on a day when we have a quiz or test, make-up work will be completed on the day of your return. Make-up work should be completed within one week of absence. WHAT IF YOU NEED HELP? Tutoring is available for any student in my class. LDHS offers math tutoring after school one day each week. Please see me for further details about tutoring or to set up an appointment to meet with me after school between 2:30-3:00, pending availability. Classroom Rules and Expectations Rules 1. Show up on time and prepared for class before the late bell rings 2. Be respectful to others 3. Keep hands, feet, objects, and inappropriate remarks to yourself 4. Keep an organized notebook (MATH ONLY!) 2. Write name, date, period, and assignment on upper right hand corner of all papers. 3. Show all work on assignments. 4. A pencil is highly recommended for this class. You will need to erase! 5. Homework and assignments must be completed entirely and on time to receive credit. 6. Check board for warm up at the beginning of class and complete. This is part of your classwork grade. 7. Participate during class. Raise your hand to be recognized in class. 8. Do not abuse bathroom privileges. 9. Refrain from bringing food/drink to class. 10. There will be absolutely no talking/communication or looking at anyone’s paper during quiz or test time. When the late bell rings students will: 1. Be in their assigned seats with all PED’s powered off and put away. 2. Have homework and homework chart on their desk to be checked and stamped for completion. 3. Begin working on the daily warm-up problem and/or follow any other appropriate directions as posted on the board. 4. Have a positive attitude and be prepared and willing to participate in the learning experience. 5. Students must bring their book binder, homework, homework chart, calculator, pencils, pens, and ruler to class each day. 6. All bags, to include purses, must be in the bin located under the student’s seat or must be place along the back wall under the windows. No bags will be on the floor at a desk or on a student’s lap during class. Calculators 1. I recommend that you purchase a scientific calculator for this class. 2. Remember to bring your personal calculator to class. 3. Please leave all classroom calculators in the room, you may sign one out if needed. 4. Calculators are school property. Be respectful when borrowing them. 5. If all of the classroom calculators are borrowed and you do not have one, you are out of luck! Extra Help 1. Don’t hesitate to set an appointment with me for extra help if you need to catch up! 2. Attend after school tutoring. 3. Get help early rather than waiting until you are completely lost! Make Up Work 1. Check the website for assignments and complete them as soon as possible. 2. Find time to copy missed notes from a reliable classmate. 3. I will email you the powerpoints that you have missed if you contact me via email. 4. You have equal to the number of school days you were absent to make up your work. (i.e. if you were absent for 3 days, you have 3 days to turn in your work after you return). 5. Assignments that were due before your absence are due on the first day you return. 6. If you have any questions about what you missed please do not ask me until after class. 7. Please set up a time to come in for extra help if you don’t fully understand the material you missed.
