Mrs. Bower’s “Beary” Important News Week of February 23rd-February 27th Dear Kindergarten Parents, I hope you are all enjoying your weekend and staying warm by a fire! It is hard to believe this is our last week in February. With our shortened week last week due to inclement weather days, we will be continuing to “catch up” with our learning in kindergarten! There are lots of five year olds that are still hoping and praying for some “real snow” before the winter ends! SOCIAL STUDIES Our class will continue to learn “Where We Live on Earth”. In order to receive a “3” on the next report card, your child will need to kno his/her address, the name of the continent we live on, the name of our country, the name of our state, name of our city (Marietta or Roswell) and name of our county. We will be singing our “The World Family” song each week to help us with these concepts. As an incentive and reward for your child knowing his/her street address (street #, street name, city, state, zip), we will keep giving out “rainbow bellies” this week. I find that making up an “address song” seems to help the children remember their addresses best! This week If your child knows his/her home address, we will to look up your street address and show the class your house on our class Active Board! The kids really love to be able to see where he/she lives on Google Earth and be able to show their classmates where they live! WRITING WORKSHOP We will be putting the finishing touches on our informational books on Abraham Lincoln. What great writers we are becoming! Our class will be celebrating the life of George Washington, our 1st president of the United States! The children will be learning important facts about George and learning why he was so important to our country. Our class will be comparing and contrasting the lives of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln this week using a Venn Diagram. We will create a class graph and write an “opinion story” stating which president we think is BEST. Letter and Sound Study/Phonics/Handwriting We will continue to practice consistently naming all 5 long and short vowel sounds During Daily 5. This week we will work with words ending with “Magic e” (cake, hope, bike) along with words containing 2 vowels “walking together”. Math Our class will work on solving subtraction facts to 10, subtraction word problems, number words and practice counting sets in a line, circle and rectangular array. We will also practice counting teen numbers up to 20 using ten frames. STEM/Health This week our class will be learning about Dental Health! We will learn how to keep our teeth healthy and discuss regular visits to the dentist! Our class will be writing stories about the Tooth Fairy, writing about how to take care of our teeth, creating models of our top and bottom teeth and much more! Last FRIDAY, our class had fun using “The Engineering Process” to create a hand-made toothbrush. The children imagined and planned how they wanted to design their toothbrush and then used a variety of materials to create a homemade toothbrush. Each child was given a hard-boiled egg which will had been previously soaked in Coca Cola--the goal was to build a toothbrush tool that would clean the stain off the egg and return it back to its original eggshell color! The tools the children designed were really awesome! Some worked great and some needed improvements to make them stronger which is all part of the learning process of STEM. This week we will begin a new STEM Challenge as we build U.S. Monuments! Science During the 3rd quarter in Science Lab, we will sort materials into categories based on composition (clay, cloth, paper, plastic, etc.) and physical attributes (color, size, shape, weight, texture, buoyancy, flexibility). We will also describe groups of rocks according to their physical attributes (large/small, heavy/light, smooth/rough, dark/light, etc.) HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! Where: Walmart, 3100 Johnson Ferry Road, Marietta, GA Time: 5 pm to 8 pm What is Math Night?: Math Night is a fun learning opportunity for kids in elementary school and their parents. It lets kids show off their math skills and introduces them to mathematical topics beyond their everyday schoolwork. Meanwhile, parents get a first-hand look at how their kids apply math in a real-world situation. They may even learn something new about mathematics themselves. What happens during Math Night?: During Math Night, meet the teachers in the front area of Walmart and pick up a grade-level question sheet, clipboard and pencil. Kids and their parents will then go on a scavenger hunt in Walmart to try to answer questions related to their curriculum. The answer sheet acts as a homework pass for the following day. Parents -be sure to download a QR Code Reader app so that kids can check to see if their answers to questions are correct. How Can My Child Practice Reading at Home? 1.
