What is SHAC ?
The Student Health Advisory Committee is a student group that
assists and advises the Student Health Center by identifying
campus health-related issues and expressing student perspectives.
SHAC’s guidance and interactions help publicize and enhance the
quality of Health Center services as well as the health and
wellbeing of the campus community.
The Student Health Activities Club is also a student group that
works to better the health of Sonoma State students and the
surrounding community. The Activities Club members host events
on campus with the goal of promoting the health and well-being of
students. Members may also participate in group related volunteer
work that can occur off campus to help members of the
community.

Silvia Rodriguez-Guest Speaker- SSU Alumni & Alcohol Awareness Month- personal story
o Silvia is an alumni from Sonoma State, who had her own experience with alcohol poisoning
and binge drinking by combining energy drinks with alcohol (Alcohol being a depressant
and energy drinks being a stimulant). The issue with combining energy drinks with alcohol
is that it tricks the body and mind. Her story with alcohol poisoning began on campus her
freshman year. She was pre-gaming with friends before attending an event. Most of her
memories of the experience come from those who saw what happened. She ended up
blacking out, and her friends did not notice. She received a ride back to campus and on the
way was sexually assaulted by her then boyfriend who was also highly intoxicated. At a
certain point, it was realized that her condition was bad and an ambulance needed to be
called. She was kept in the hospital with a 0.38 blood alcohol level. There were serve
consequences after that night. Family issues, paying back medical bills, emotionally
damaging, etc. But she shared her message and continues to do so; her only wish is that if
you do drink be smart, stay with people who know the signs and Save a Seawolf.
o Every year 1800 college students die due to alcohol related incidences nationwide. Know
the signs; get help if you need it.

Brianao Associated Students is currently working on a resolution to change the library rules during
finals week. The week before and during finals the library is open 24 hours, however
currently on the first floor stays open past midnight. The resolution would maintain that
multiple floors of the library stay open the entire 24 hours. If approved through AS, the

Chlamydia – The CDC has a new handout on Chlamydia that the Student Health Center has
available. Dr. Schwartz discussed why it is an important topic for college students.
Anyone who has sex can get chlamydia through unprotected anal, vaginal, or oral sex. Chlamydia
is a common sexually transmitted disease that can be easily cured. If left untreated, chlamydia can
make it difficult for a woman to get pregnant. Sexually active young people are at higher risk of
getting chlamydia due to biological factors. If you are a sexually active women under 25 yrs, or
older women with risk factors and multiple sex partners, or a sex partner who has a sexually
transmitted infection, you should get a test for chlamydia every year. Gay, bisexual and men who
have sex with men; as well as pregnant women should be tested for chlamydia. Most people have
no symptoms, but even with no symptoms, chlamydia can cause damage to your reproductive
system.
A copy of the handout will be available to students in the front lobby.
Getting tested for chlamydia at the Student Health Center is at a reduced cost of $18.00 (the Health
Center absorbs an additional $10.00 for the test) and it can be done as a urine test for men or
women or as a vaginal swab for women. Treatment for men and women is approximately $5.00 at
the Student Health Center.
