TEACHER TRAINING
Hot Yoga Studio Teacher Training
Whether you are interested in learning to teach yoga or would like to deepen you
own practice, Hot Yoga’s Teacher Training Program is committed to the personal
success of every participant. Our 200 hour certification program provides a
comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of teaching yoga. The program is
certified by the internationally recognized Yoga Alliance (YA) and, upon graduation,
participants will qualify for 200 hr RYT (registered yoga teacher) certification.
Expect an incredibly enriching experience that will go beyond the standards set
forth by YA. Participants will be immersed in a program rich in the full spectrum of
all that is yoga: vibrant, purposeful, authentic, conscious, joyful and
transformative.
Throughout the training, participants will be encouraged to explore their full abilities
in both body and spirit and be prepared to teach yoga with clarity and joy. Our
team of creative and enthusiastic teachers will guide you through this well
organized program with intelligence and compassion. The training begins May 14th
and ends in October.
We will meet monthly in weekend immersions to be held at the Hot Yoga Studio.
We will also meet on Tuesday evenings from 6p – 9p in a sangha setting, i.e., an
enriching discussion around yoga and its sister science, ayurveda. We realize the
majority of participants in the program have time constraints and outside
responsibilities, therefore the entire program is designed to support your current
lifestyle as you experience your teacher training and deepen your connection to
yoga and your personal practice.
Program Overview
Physiological, psychological and spiritual aspects of asana, pranayama, and
meditation; basic anatomy and physiology of the physical body and subtle energy
body; chakras, bandhas, history and philosophy of yoga through study of ancient
yoga texts; intensives including ayurveda, Sanskrit, ethics, pre and post-natal
principles of practice; demonstration, lesson planning, teaching, assists, practice
teaching sessions, observation.
Format and Requirements
This 200-hour program training runs for 8 weekends which are determined by the
needs of the class. We will also meet once during the week to keep the information
fresh from month-to-month, allowing us to meet fewer weekends and still accrue
the mandated YA hours. Self-study, group projects and regular yoga classes will be
conducted outside of scheduled hours and can be arranged according to your own
personal schedule. Participants are required to have a 6-month minimum yoga
practice along with the desire to live and share your yoga. The Teacher Training
Application must be completed and returned with a $500 deposit for participation in
the program.
Teachers
Sutras, Sacred Texts, and Philosophy
Dr. Graham Schweig has been practicing yoga for more than 40-years. He has
traveled and lived in India learning yoga under the guidance of traditional teachers.
He is an author, translator, leader of yoga seminars and workshops, and a
university professor of religion who teaches about the universal messages of the
heart. Graham earned his Ph.D from Harvard University in Comparative Religion
and his specialization is in the areas of the history and philosophy of yoga; the
spiritual traditions of India, and the mystical traditions of divine love. He is an
internationally sought out speaker and a regularly invited lecturer at the
Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. His book, “Bhagavad Gita, The Beloved
Lord’s Secret Love Song,” is a required text in the teacher training and Dr. Schweig,
of course, the teacher.
Pranayama
Gabriel Gerard has studied and continues to study with a variety of teachers of
Yoga, Breath, Meditation, and the teaching of the Mystery Schools. She began her
studies in the early 1990’s with Kathleen Barratt at the Subtle Energy Institute in
Virginia Beach, VA. She is recognized as an advanced teacher in facilitating and
teaching Breathwork and meditation with groups and individuals; has completed
her training in Basics through Level One in Bio-energy as taught by Margaret and
Mietek Wirkus; and is completing her masters. Gabrielle is a certified teacher of
the KaliRayTriYoga Method of Hatha Yoga, Basics through Level 2, and started
studying with TriYoga in 1996. An accomplished musician, Gabrielle also holds a
liberal arts degree from Radford University with a focus in Religion, Philosophy, and
Communications.
Anatomy and Physiology
Caroline Clark Rivera is an associate professor of biology at Tidewater Community
College where she teaches anatomy and physiology. She is also a longtime yogini
and yoga teacher. As such, Caroline is able to directly relate her teaching to what
is important for both students and student teachers. Her knowledge and relaxed
style make anatomy approachable for anyone with an interest. Her lessons are
relevant and fun; not typically adjectives assigned to anatomy! Caroline is
currently working on her Ph.D.
Director
Kate Burns took her first yoga class in 2003, was certified in 2005 and has been
teaching continuously since. Her training includes two 200 hour and a 500 hour
teacher training. The first 200 hour training was with internationally known hot
yoga instructor Jimmy Barkan. Studying ayurveda since 2006, she’s nearly
completed her studies for the designation of certified ayurvedic consultant. As with
most committed yoga teachers, she continue to learn through workshops with
wonderfully gifted yogis; some very well-known and others humbly content to teach
in obscurity. It’s Kate’s hope that this teacher training not only teaches you to be a
successful, compassionate yoga teacher but instills and nurtures the belief that
yoga heals, not just for the moment, but for a life, and is available to everyone.

the rate of 5% per month. There is a 10 percent discount if paid in full, in

if unable to complete the program for the current session, a credit will be issued to
take the training at a later date.
What if I have to miss a weekend?
Full attendance in the program is required for YA. If you anticipate missing more
than a weekend, you should consider taking the training at a different time. Making
up a weekend requires extra time and money. Typically, you will need to pay the
regular weekend fee of $300 and, depending on what is taught that weekend, you
may need to pay the private hourly rate from the teacher(s) who taught that
weekend. So make every effort not to miss.
