MINORITY STUDENT ADVOCATE POSITION
DESCRIPTION:

School-Community minority student advocate

To assist student/teacher awareness interaction, parent-school
communication and community awareness

Work primarily in schools while remaining active in community groups and
organizations in conjunction with community awareness activities
REQUIREMENTS:

 Person of cultural minority

Bilingual in Somali/Spanish/English languages (s) with preference for Somali


CONDITIONS:


The position is offered on an eleven month contract starting immediately and
ending June 30th, 2013
Employment will be part time - 25 hours per week for 48 weeks

Beginning pay to be determined based on candidate’s education and experience.
The person would be an employee of Marshall Public Schools

Evaluations will occur at quarterly intervals and the direct supervisors will be

A. Provide a connecting service to families with minority children in
the area of family relationships, cultural/emotional health and
school performance.
Family Relationships
- Provide clear understanding of school expectations to parents and/or
guardians of minority students and provide link to school administration,
teachers, school related services. Example: Family events in the park prior to
the start of school which include informational sessions about school
requirements like filling out health forms and activities forms etc. or a
newsletter published in Spanish or other native languages to serve as a
source of communication.
Cultural/Emotional Health
- Provide culturally specific experiences for students of culture to create a
sense of belonging/connectedness and to raise levels of awareness as it
relates to students’ role in the school and the community at large. Example, a
club within the school setting and the after school setting which would allow
students to learn of their own culture and a setting where students can
experience wholesome fun within the Marshall community like bowling or ice
skating.
School Performance
- Improve student motivation to attend school, to achieve in school and to
participate in school related activities. For example, work with student mentors
from both the High School and University as well as peers to experience
success in the area of academics and to experience a comfort zone to enable
them to feel comfortable to participate in school supported activities.
B. To attend Community Services monthly program meetings and
provide information to supervisors in the form of monthly reports.
C. To establish a record keeping system for data that relates to program
coordinating and maintain confidentiality for private matters of the clients that are
served.
