Converting Military Training To A Rewarding Civilian Career
Cedar Rapids, IA—William Penn University College for Working Adults hosts a Career Summit
Tuesday, April 15, 2014 for all service members and military veterans seeking to convert hard-won military
training and experience into a rewarding civilian career. To better assist the participants and employers, there
will be assessment results, pre-screening and mock interviews available. The one-day event will be held at the
Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 50 2nd Avenue Bridge, Cedar Rapids, IA.
Respected Iowa employers with national and international opportunities will partner for seminars, G.I.
Bill benefits information and career-enhancing information throughout the day.
Those employers include
Transamerica (Cedar Rapids, IA); Principal Financial Group® (Des Moines, IA), UnityPoint, St. Luke’s
Hospital, Alliant Energy (Cedar Rapids, IA), Rockwell Collins (Cedar Rapids, IA), and Home Depot.
Additional participants include IOTA (West Des Moines, IA), The Results Group (Clive, IA), Hero to Hired, and
Iowa Department of Education – Veterans and Military Education facilitating skill enhancement and seminars.
Keynote speaker will be U.S. Army General Tommy Franks (Ret.), decorated four-star General. Before
his 2003 retirement, Franks was Commander of U.S. Central Command, overseeing the United States Armed
Forces in the 25-country region, including the Middle East. General Franks has received numerous awards
highlighted with The Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004, the highest honor for an American,. Since his
retirement, General Franks has traveled the world, speaking on leadership, character and the value of
Democracy. His autobiography, American Soldier, debuted as Number 1 on the New York Times Bestseller List
in August 2004. He serves on many boards for U.S. businesses and non-profit organizations. Currently, he is a
Board of Trustees member for William Penn University.
Also featured speaker is Joe Crookham, President of Musco Lighting, Inc., an Iowa-based company with
worldwide recognition. Crookham serves on many national organizations which create educational and
economic opportunities. Those include serving on the Board of Trustees at William Penn University and the
U.S. National Parks Foundation, among others. He is widely recognized for Iowa and national economic
development and many philanthropic contributions.
According to GI Jobs magazine, military skills are attractive to employers. Team-building, leadership
and plan execution are intangibles of valuable job skills because they are difficult and expensive to teach. From
a corporate perspective, employers seek military applicants because of their varied backgrounds, commonality,
leadership, teamwork and loyalty skills. William Penn University College for Working Adults encompasses all
