DECEMBER 2015 Linden Elementary Doylestown, PA December 2015 Miss Walker’s Classroom Newsletter Technology Reading The children have been visiting the computer lab on a weekly basis for technology instruction. Here are the highlights on skills that we have been building and will continue to work on throughout the month of December: Exploring typing programs to develop keyboarding skills. Save and print a document. Retrieve a document. Enter text with appropriate spacing and capitalization using Microsoft Word. This month in reading the students will focus on making connections to text. They will use prior knowledge to make “text-to-self” connections and will use their connections to make sense of the text. The children will build vocabulary and concept knowledge. They will use their background knowledge to make inferences while reading. We will continue to emphasize fluent reading through the use of reader’s theatre. The students will build their phonics skills by sorting their Word Study words. Flat Stanley Writing Be on the look-out for information coming home soon regarding our Flat Stanley project. In conjunction with our geography unit in social studies and our letter writing unit in language arts, the students will be creating a “Flat Stanley” and writing a letter to someone who lives in a different part of the country or the world. This is a very exciting project for the children! Please let me know if you have any questions. During the month of December the children will be trying their hands at writing friendly letters. They will write letters to their teacher and their classmates. Our class “Post Office” will open this month. The students will also be writing opinion pieces using persuasive language. Math In math, the students will focus on three main areas during the month of December: 1. Solve number stories 2. Read and show temperatures 3.
