In our hands we hold the future. March 2014 Dear Parent/Carer We have again had an exciting and busy term. Below is a synopsis of a host of activities that we have been taking part in. Dancing at the Playhouse Both Y3 and Y6 have danced at the playhouse this term. Y3 as part of the ‘Dance your Socks off’ event, and Y6 as part of the ‘North Somerset Dance Festival’. Both classes made us very proud - not only with their fabulous dancing but also with their excellent behaviour. Well done Miss Harris and Miss Farnell for all your hard work in preparing the pupils. Y6 Carducci Concert Y6 were lucky enough to attend Churchill Academy last week to watch a concert given by the Carducci String Quartet. This was a wonderful opportunity for children to see music performed live by a professional group of musicians. ‘Son’ of STAR time This term has seen a spin off from our STAR time activities where parents and members of the community come and share their hobbies and skills with the KS2 pupils. This term we have run ‘son of star time’ where the pupils share their skills. The Y6 pupils have been running a host of exciting activities; chess, design technology, crochet, origami, sewing, learning about myths and legends, cartoon drawing, singing, learning languages- Greek, Hungarian and sign language, ICT skills, running, skipping and table tennis! What a talented group of students we have! The Y6 have written lesson plans and planned their half hour time slots carefully. All the staff have been most impressed with their talents and their organisational abilities. Well done Y6! RNLI Visit Year 1 and Year 2 were fascinated listening to members of the RNLI who came to talk to them. They enjoyed looking at the uniforms and the various boats that they used. Cooking This term has seen a re-launch of our cooking activities in school. Miss Hardwidge is going to be cooking with each group of pupils in turn. We have designed a variety of dishes for each class to prepare over the course of the year- with the aim that we will discover some talented chefs amongst our pupils! Y4 Residential Year 4 enjoyed three days away learning all about the Romans on their residential trip to Dorset. This included; dressing up and learning about the armour that Romans soldiers wore, looking at Roman technology such as bridges and aqueducts, examining their clay pots, mosaics and weaving and cooking Roman food. Team building skills were developed throughout and a great time was had by all! Badminton School Science Visit We had our annual visit from Badminton School from Bristol who came and conducted some wonderful experiments for us, including using liquid nitrogen! World Book Day What a fabulous sight with everyone dressed as their favourite story characters! I enjoyed reading ’The giraffe who got in a knot’ to several year groups, who loved the rhythm and rhyme of the story. I hope the day has inspired the children, and you, to share books regularly with your child- there is nothing better than listening to a bedtime story - and often listening rather than the decoding is what gives children the love of books! Y6 Ancient Greece Museum This term the children in Y6 have been learning about Ancient Greece. The topic culminated in the transformation of their classroom into an Ancient Greece Museum. Visitors to the museum were treated to food tasting, an opportunity to ‘dress as an Ancient Greek’ as well as learning all about the gods and goddesses, myths and legends and taking part in a mini Olympics. Sports Relief The pupils have been organising a sponsored run for Sports relief which they have just taken part in last Friday. Each year group ran around a track on the school field. They all seemed to enjoy it, and most year groups managed to dodge the rain! We are discovering some super cross country runners amongst our pupils with the help of our sports coach Chris Millard. We have raised a staggering £725 so far with some more still to come in. Well done everyone! PTFA Quiz A huge thank you to Darren and Kirsty Clements, and Tina Baylis for making our quiz night such a success. Darren did an excellent job as quiz master with a fascinating range of questions – some to suit everyone! Tina and Kirsty were in charge of the drinks and our jacket potato supper! A great night was had by all and they raised a fantastic £373.70 for the PTFA, which will be spent on things for our children. Hospice Fundraiser The HAWK councillors are very keen to fundraise for the hospice. Last term I postponed their request as Hi Council were running the soup kitchen in aid of the Philippine Disaster (which was an immediate response at that particular time). Although it is quite close to the sponsored event for Sports Relief I have given them permission to hold a mufti day on Friday 4th April. Children just need to wear their own clothes and bring a small donation to school. When children have the spontaneous wish to help others it is really hard to decline them and knock back their enthusiasm. So, I apologise that there are two events quite close together that we are asking you to donate to, but I hope you understand why. Staffing For part of term 4 and all of term 5 we welcome the arrival of more student teachers. Miss Griffin will be in Year 2 and Miss Buckley in Year 5. Staff Change Some of you may have heard that Mrs Howe is going to retire (early!) at the end of this school year. She has an exciting adventure ahead of her as she is emigrating to the Netherlands. We, however, will greatly miss her! She has made a fabulous contribution to school over the past seven years. The Deputy post is currently being advertised for September and I will keep you updated with regard to the appointment when it is made. Luci Amos Governor Update The Governors have been very busy since January undertaking various activities in school and supporting class visits. Governors have contributed to the Mystery Reader programme and made very welcome by Reception class children. A number of meetings between Governors and Teacher subject leaders have taken place. This also involves jointly writing and presenting Annual Reports to the Curriculum and Standards Committee Meetings. Involvement in the Catapult Project and Science with Year 2’s looking at “ Growth and change” and “Differences between Animals and Humans” plus Messy Church, Collective Worship, Celebration Assembly’s and Church services. There have been Behaviour and Lesson Observation visits carried out recently, in addition to regular support to one of the Pupil Voice groups every Thursday, plus sewing with the children in various classes. Outside of school Governors have accompanied KS2 children to the Pantomime at the Playhouse and a visit to Churchill Academy to listen to a String Quartet. As you can see Governors play a very active part in school life and I hope this provides a flavour of how involved and interested they are in the day to day activities and learning of all the pupils at Hutton Primary School.
