TEACHERS OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN/SECOND LANGUAGE INTENSIVE SUMMER PROGRAM (TEF/SL) Program Overview and Objectives This program is designed for international in-service teachers of English as a Foreign/Second Language (EFL or ESL). The program is delivered by experts in the field of teacher training who are also currently involved in language teaching. All teacher trainers are certified by Canadian and international authorities, hold a minimum of Master’s degrees in Applied Linguistics or ELT, and are approved by TESL Ontario/TESL Canada. The objective of the program is to introduce the students to current ESL/EFL teaching methodologies practiced in the English-speaking world, specifically in the areas of teaching the four language skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing), pedagogical grammar, and language assessment. Special emphasis will be given to teaching English for Specific Purposes as integrated with teaching the four language skills. In addition to the teaching methodologies modules outlined below, the students will also complete their observation and teaching practicum in the International ESL program at Algonquin College. An integral part of the intensive TEF/SL program is also refining and enriching the participants’ English skills. Based on their language needs and level, participants will be taking ESL classes, which will add to the “immersion” effect and will also give them additional exposure to language teaching methodologies. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive the Certificate of Achievement in TEF/SL issued by Algonquin College Language Institute. Program Structure In-service teachers will participate in an eight-week training session that will incorporate lectures, workshops, seminars, video demonstrations, observation and teaching practica, selfstudy sessions, and socio-cultural activities.
