PRONOUNS
Pronoun Basics
1. Pronouns are words that replace nouns. The antecedent of a pronoun is the
noun that the pronoun is replacing.
a. For example, in the sentence, “The dog ate the chicken; then he
belched.” The dog is the antecedent of the pronoun he.
2. There are different types of pronouns, but we will focus mainly on personal
pronouns because so many people use them incorrectly.

How do you know whether to choose a SUBJECT or an OBJECT pronoun?
1. Use a subject pronoun to replace the subject of a sentence. (Remember that
the subject of the sentence is whom the sentence is about.)
a. Wrong: Me and Shelly want to go to the movies. (You wouldn’t say
“Me want to go to the movies” right?!)
b. Right: Shelly and I want to go to the movies.
c. Wrong: Him and me are dating.
d. Right: He and I are dating
2. Use an object pronoun to replace the object of a sentence. (Remember that
the object of the sentence receives the action of the verb.)
a. Wrong: The dog bit Mark and I. (You wouldn’t say “The dog bit I”
right?!)
b. Right: The dog bit Mark and me.
