The antecedent of a pronoun is the noun that the pronoun is replacing. a. For example, in the sentence, “The dog ate the chicken; then he belched.” The dog is the antecedent of the pronoun he. 2. There are different types of pronouns, but we will focus mainly on personal pronouns because so many people use them incorrectly. Subject Pronouns I you he/she/it we you they who/whoever Object Pronouns me you him/her/it us you them whom/whomever How do you know whether to choose a SUBJECT or an OBJECT pronoun? 1. Use a subject pronoun to replace the subject of a sentence. (Remember that the subject of the sentence is whom the sentence is about.) a. Wrong: Me and Shelly want to go to the movies. (You wouldn’t say “Me want to go to the movies” right?!) b. Right: Shelly and I want to go to the movies. c. Wrong: Him and me are dating. d. Right: He and I are dating 2. Use an object pronoun to replace the object of a sentence. (Remember that the object of the sentence receives the action of the verb.) a. Wrong: The dog bit Mark and I. (You wouldn’t say, “Give I a good grade” right?!) d. Right: Give Helen and me a good grade. 3. Use an object pronoun as the object in a prepositional* phrase. a. Wrong: They sent the award to Sarah and I. b. Right: They sent the award to Sarah and me. c. Wrong: The dog is hiding between Zachary and I. d.
