FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Gunflint Trail Historical Society completes oral history project The Gunflint Trail Historical Society has recently completed an oral history project . The project involved conducting, transcribing, and digitizing more than 30 historical interviews with various Gunflint Trail personalities: year-round residents, business owners, and summer homeowners. The resources developed through this project will allow the GTHS to expand its educational offerings. Due to the highly personal nature of the interviews transcribed and preserved through this work, this project ensures future generations will be given a unique “slice of life on the Gunflint” that allows a deeper understanding of the area’s history and culture than any other historical document. Interview transcripts and recordings are stored at Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center and are also available to researchers upon request. This project was made possible by through a Minnesota Historical Society grant from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Gunflint Trail Historical Society The Gunflint Trail Historical Society was formed in 2005. The Gunflint Trail Historical Society members are area residents - past and present - visitors, travelers, neighbors and friends. All have joined together with a common goal, "to preserve the history of the Gunflint Trail and its early settlers for residents, guests, travelers, and future generations." The GTHS’s major project is the Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center, located 55 miles up the Gunflint Trail, which opened in July 2010. The museum, which tells the cultural and natural history of the Gunflint Trail, is open every day from 10-5, Memorial Day weekend through mid-October each year.
