Gunflint Trail Historical Society Chik-Wauk Nature Center Nature Center Program Director – Job Description and Information Position Dates: June 1 – August 31 (flexible) Work schedule: 25 hours per week from June 1 – August 31 (5 days/week - flexible) The Nature Center is open from 11 am to 4 pm daily, including weekends Hourly Rate: $12 - $15 Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center: Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center opened in the summer 2010. It is a small historical museum housed in the former Chik-Wauk Lodge building on Saganaga Lake. The museum is open seasonally from Memorial Day weekend to mid-October and is open daily during the operating season. The museum is located 55 miles northwest of Grand Marais, MN, along the Gunflint Trail (Cook County Highway 12). The property also features 50 acres of grounds which host a network of hiking trails. The museum hosts approximately 7500 guests each season. Nature Center Program Director: The position provides a unique opportunity to bring children of all ages into nature surrounded by the habitat of the Gunflint Trail’s northern Minnesota forest and lakes. It is an opportunity to share your talents, expertise, experience, knowledge, and passion to provide innovative programming and spark the enthusiasm with all visitors to the center. Encounters may be with groups from schools or other organizations. Most visitors are small family groups. Responsibilities: Developing & implementing naturalist programs for the NEW Chik-Wauk Nature Center, primarily focusing on familiarizing young visitors with nature, through exploration, getting dirty and having fun. Greeting and directing visitors to all aspects of the Chik-Wauk site Expanding the existing Explorers Club Program already in place for Chik-Wauk visitors, http://www.chikwauk.com/explorers/ Working with the site manager to promote and market naturalist activities Assisting with directing and training volunteers to help with nature center activities Qualifications: Outgoing, enthusiastic personality Love and knowledge of natural surrounds Willing to work with all ages Ability to help visitors learn, observe and enjoy all the woods have to offer Programs: That will be offered throughout the summer months from Mid-June to MidAugust Sundays: Conversation Day afternoons Tuesdays: Kid’s Day, USFS (2 pm) all day long activities Thursday: Panel Day (we have not come up with a good phrase for this day. The naturalist will highlight one of the panels that week and talk about that specific panel.)
