Tectonic Plates

Tectonic plates -
Huge pieces of lithosphere that slowly move on the
asthensphere, and consist of the crust and the rigid, uppermost part of the mantle.
Major plates -
African plate, Eurasian plate, Pacific plate (Ring of Fire), IndoAustralian plate, North American plate, South American plate, Atlantic plate.
Volcanic eruptions -
Major geoloical events that occur when a dense plate
subducts below a less dense plate as they converge.
Subduction -
Occurs when one plate is denser than another and is forced below as
the 2 plates converge at their boundary.
Earthquakes -
Major geological events that occur when plates shift suddenly and
release stored energy; a frequent occurrence at transform boundaries.
Mountain building -
Major geological event that occurs when continental plates of
equal density converge.
Spreading ridges -
Ridges formed from new crustal material at diverging oceanic
plate boundaries.
Ocean basins -
Movement at the plates create dense oceanic crust that sinks
lower in the asthenosphere than the less dense continental crust, resulting in
depressions on Earth’s surface that fill with water.
Convergent Divergent Transform -
When 2 plates are pushing into one another. Ex: volcano, mountains
When 2 plates are pulling away from one another. Ex: ocean basins
When 2 plates are sliding/grinding past one another. Ex: earthquake
