September 27th, 2012 Dear Parents and Families, Welcome to the 2012 Curriculum Night! I’m so glad you decided to stop in and get an idea of what your student will be learning this year. In addition to the following brief overviews, all my Humanities classes will integrate Geography and Current Events activities. The following is a snapshot of the activities and goals covered in my classes during the upcoming three trimesters. 6th Grade Humanities: The theme of 6th grade humanities is World History with an emphasis on Ancient Civilizations. Your student will study Ancient Egypt, China, Mesopotamia, Rome and Greece- to name a few! 7th Grade Humanities: The 7th grade will learn about the Reformation, the Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution and the start of American history. 7th graders will re-enact historical trials and situations that marked the U.S. and the world. 8th Grade Humanities: The 8th grade will begin the year by discussing and learning about the 2012 presidential election. Next, your student will study the Constitution of the U.S.A. and take the Constitution test. We will finish the year with a unit on Journalism and Communication. 6th Grade Religion: Your student will be coming closer to God this year by learning more about the Sacraments, Scripture, prayer, the Eucharist and Mary. I hope to encourage them to pray more frequently and attend Sunday Mass. The 6th grade patron saints are Blessed Pier Giorgio Frasatti and Saint Maria Goretti. 7th Grade Religion: The theme for 7th grade religion is studying Jesus as “the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6). We will continue to study the Sacraments, the mysteries of the Trinity, the Incarnation, and the Paschal Mystery. I hope also to teach the 7th grade about Social Justice and Catholic Social Teachings. The 7th grade patron saints are Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta and St. Phillip Neri. 8th Grade Religion: The 8th graders are preparing for their Confirmation this year! It is an exciting time and in my classroom they will be learning about the importance of this Sacrament as well as choosing Confirmation names and saints. They will be researching their own personal patron saint and creating a project to share with the whole school. In addition, the 8th graders will be taking a field trip to a soup kitchen in October which will be a great opportunity for your child to learn about the importance of community service. The 8th grade patron saints are St. John Bosco and St. Therese of Lisieux. Thank you so much for coming tonight and please reach out to me with any questions or comments: katie.kleczek@stmatthiasschool.org. All the best, Katie Kleczek
