For this trip, we will be exploring the beautiful land of North Carolina by land
and water! We will start with hiking a section of the Appalachian Trail, and end
with a rafting trip on the Nantahala River. This trip is not only about hiking and
rafting, but also about creating life-long friendships and preparing you for the
first year of your college experience. We will be hiking by day and sitting
around the fire by night. It will be a great start to your college career!


Expect warm weather with potentially chilly nights. It is essential to bring
appropriate rain gear and footwear for this trip as we will be out in the
elements while hiking. Be well prepared for all types of weather!

View the sample gear list and bring appropriate clothing. You will be responsible
for any personal items (toiletries, eating out money, etc.) We will provide the
following as necessary: Tents, map and Compass/GPS, stoves and cook sets,
water purification, food for camping portion of trip, and first aid kits. See
reverse for a more detailed equipment list and sample itinerary.


EKU Adventure Program Trips are drug and alcohol free. Trips are for EKU
students and faculty/staff members of the Fitness and Wellness Center only.
The trip leaders may dismiss you at any time from an EKU Adventure Programs
trip/workshop/event for any type of behavior or action that endangers you or
the group.

This trip will involve a lot of time spent
with a large group of people. It is essential
that all participants respect one another
and put the needs of the group above their
own wants. It is further essential that
everyone does their share of cleaning and
makes every effort to meet at determined
times/locations. Also, there may be
significant time apart from trip leaders on
this trip. You are ultimately responsible for
your own actions, and may be dismissed
from the trip at your own expense at any
time.

EKU Adventure Programs:
Gear List
Upper Body:
□ (2) T-shirts (cotton or polyester is fine here)
□ (1) Base layer of mid-weight synthetic long underwear material (no cotton) – wool, polypro, capilene, or similar
□ (1) mid layer – fleece pull over, wool sweater, etc.
□ (1-2) Sports-bra (ladies) please avoid cotton if possible.
□ (1) Waterproof shell – fully waterproof jacket with hood- Gore-Tex or other breathable fabric recommended.
□ (1) sun-hat (baseball cap)
Lower Body:
□ (2) Pants – 1 can be cotton for travel days, try to make the other a synthetic material for hiking. Or just wear shorts.
□ (1) Base layer of mid-weight synthetic long underwear material (Mostly for sleeping) – wool, polypro, capilene, or similar
□ (2) Nylon shorts – loose fitting athletic or water sports shorts
□ (3) Underwear – please avoid cotton.
□ (1) Waterproof rain pants (optional)
□ (3) pair hiking socks (NO COTTON) – at least 2 pair should be mid weight hiking socks
□ (2) pair thin liner socks (no cotton, optional)
□ (1) Sturdy hiking shoes – Stiff, solid hiking shoes
□ (1) Camp Shoe/Closed toed shoe for rafting
Gear:
□ Backpack – Should be at minimum 65 liters. No external frame packs. --WE CAN PROVIDE PACKS.
□ (2) water bottles/hydration bladder of some sort
□ Sleeping bag – (WE CAN PROVIDE) Synthetic, rated to 20 degrees F and still having 4-6 inches of loft
□ Stuff sack/compression sack for your sleeping bag
□ (1) – large heavy garbage bag
□ Sleeping pad – closed cell foam and at least 3/8” thick (self-inflators are welcome if you bring a patch kit)
□ (3-4) smaller stuff sacks or mesh bags to organize your gear in (optional)
□ Climbing gear
Other Items:
□ Personal medications and toiletries (prescription meds, contacts, glasses, toothbrush, tampons, deodorant, etc)
□ Plastic bowl (Tupperware type with a snap on lid) and spoon
□ Flashlight or headlamp (WE CAN PROVIDE)
□ Lip balm, sunscreen, mosquito repellent
□ Bandana (optional)
□ Sunglasses (optional)

EKU Adventure Programs:
Tentative Itinerary
DAY 1- Monday 7/27:

Meet at AP Base Camp at 10:00am to do a shake-down, and pack gear

Head to EKU’s Challenge Course for lunch/team building

Leave to Maywoods Environmental & Educational Laboratory

Spend the night at Maywoods lodge
DAY 2 - Tuesday 7/28

9am-Wake up, breakfast and depart for NC

Hike the AT!

Set up camp, dinner & debrief
DAY 3 – Wednesday 7/29

9am-Wake up, breakfast and depart for hike back to NOC

Hike the AT!

Set up camp on platform tents at NOC & debrief
DAY 4- Thursday 7/30:

Breakfast and meet for rafting half day 9am

Rafting on the Nantahala!!

Head back to Maywoods
DAY 5- Friday 7/31:

Leave Maywoods

Arrive back in Richmond by 11am

