Cheerleading News
On Saturday, February 14th, the Cheerleading Team competed in Jamfest Canada at the PowerAde Centre. Our girls put
on another winning performance and brought home a first place trophy to add to our collection. Thank you to all the
parents, TSMS students, and Mrs. Lord who came out to support us on such a cold day. Next, the team will be travelling
to Niagara Falls to compete in the Canadian Nationals.
Let's go Thunderwolves!
Gold at 8:00 a.m.
At 6:20 a.m. on Wednesday February 17th in the dark of the early morning, three buses left Thomas Street
Middle School with members of the Grade 8 Festival Concert Band, bound for an early performance time of 8:00 a.m. at
Redeemer College in Ancaster, as part of the 2015 local MUSICFEST Band Competition.
After a customary 5 minute warm-up on stage, we performed our 3 concert selections in front of two
adjudicators, University of Toronto professor, Cam Walters and Mr. John Phillips, and then our students proceeded to
work with Professor Walters in an excellent post-performance clinic.
Professor Walters went over the “higher” aspects of playing in an ensemble, stressing that all players had a
responsibility to listen to the hierarchical balance of a band and to adjust whilst playing; all of his comments were “right
on the money” and delivered in a very encouraging tone.
At this point, in the interests of “full disclosure”, I will confide that I had originally requested of MusicFest just
a clinic after our performance and not a rank standing and clinic. However, as the students were leaving the room,
Professor Walters approached me and said “… your performance was a “total Gold” standing, are you sure you don’t
want the recognition of the Gold and, therefore, an invitation to the Nationals in May?” We took the Gold.
My heartfelt gratitude goes out to all of my Grade 8 Band students for their determination and for beginning
this music making journey with me. Your deportment, behaviour and performance does you, and all of us, a great
honour here at Thomas Street. We will accept the invitation to the Nationals and perhaps, just perhaps, this year will be
the year, and the first year, for Thomas Street to ever capture a National Gold award from MusicFest Canada. A final
deep thanks goes to Mrs. McNabb and Mrs. Lord for helping us on that brutally early morning.
With thanks, Charles Brown
SOUND OF MUSIC
Congratulations to all the students who participated in our T.S.M.S. Winter Concert. Your performances in both the
bands and the choirs were truly outstanding. You are to be commended for your hard work, your exceptional musicmaking and for your commitment to the Music program.
Success in Music. Success in Life. It's no coincidence.
