Wednesday, March 25, 2015 IMPORTANT INFORMATION for Families of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students As we move forward with our upcoming production of ‘Once Upon a Mattress,’ we wanted to keep you updated and to reach out to those who would like to assist on one of our committees. Please review the information carefully and contact any one of us if you have questions. 1. We understand that some families may have prior commitments for the dates of the play – Friday, April 17th at 7pm and Saturday, April 18th at 3pm. If your child is unable to participate, PLEASE SEND A NOTE TO SCHOOL OR EMAIL MRS. SILLECK, if you have not already done so, BY THURSDAY, March 26th. 2. Students who are unable to attend the public performances will NOT need a costume for the in-school performance on Friday. However, they will be seated near the stage and will be expected to sing the music they have learned in class. 3. Committees: we are still in need of assistance with building the set, creating costumes, and publicity for the show. Even if your child is unable to attend the public performances, you and they can be a part of the overall experience by helping with preparations. Work will be done during Spring Break and the week following. a. Interested in helping with the SET? Call Joe Holbrook (740-503-4726). b. Can you help cut and/or sew COSTUMES? Cheryl Proctor (theproc@roadrunner.com), Blythe Turner (bcturner4@gmail.com), and Julie Amiet ( amietj64@gmail.com) will be in the copy room at school on Friday from 3-5pm making tunics for the knights. If you can come at that time and help to cut and/or sew they would appreciate the help. If you can help during Spring Break please contact one of them to let them know of your availability. c. Interested in PROPS, PROGRAM, PUBLICITY, or TICKETS? Please contact Mrs. Silleck. 4. Headgear: ALL students participating in the public performances will need to have some type of hat or head covering. Mrs. Walsh has been meeting with students to discuss options. Those who have chosen a specific hat style will receive a pattern and instructions for making it on Friday. GIRLS may choose a ‘Juliet’ style cap (sewing and/or fabric gluing involved) a cone or a headband style hat (sewing and or/fabric gluing involved) a wreath of flowers or braided ribbon with or w/out lace hanging in the back (no sewing needed) BOYS may choose: A ‘lord’s’ hat or a Robin Hood style hat (directions will be provided). PLEASE NOTE that boys who choose to be a lord need a different costume than the knights. They can use the sweat pants and dress shirt as a base, but their outer tunic would be different. Some can have capes as well for variety. Another good option for all boys for pants would be legging style athletic pants (not baggy). If your son prefers to be a lord and you can provide a costume, please have them let Mrs. Walsh know by Thursday. Boys who choose to be knights or archers will have a simple ‘hood’ style head covering to go with their tunic. As communicated earlier, they will need baseball style or sweat pants (or legging style athletic pants) and any color long sleeve dress shirt. They should wear brown or black dress shoes or loafers and they will need a belt to go over the tunic we are making. We are here to assist you in creating your child’s medieval costume. We do have some gowns available for the girls if they are having difficulty finding one. Ideas of ways to make a modern gown look medieval can be found online, or girls may check out a book from our library. Girls are asked to bring their costume in to school when we return from Spring Break so that the costume committee will know what else may be needed. Through the production we are developing the content standards for grades 6, 7 and 8 within our diocesan course of study. We would be happy to share the specific standards with you if you would like further information.
