Chapter 4
1. Go to www.youtube.com/oprylive Click on videos on the tab on the top left, then type
into the search bar the name of the musician you are looking for. Find a song and listen,
write down the title, year, what it’s about and what category of music you would place it
in. (the more information the better the grade) Do this for 3 musicians from the chapter,
you should have 1 page per musician.
2. Create a timeline of the evolution of White-American folk music. Include important
people, songs, events in history, music styles, and vocabulary from the chapter.
3. With a group of no more than 4 people, practice and perform for the class a ballad (must
be at least 2 mins long). Explain what a ballad is. Provide the title, composer, music,
lyrics, web address (if applicable), be sure to refer to page 22 of the textbook for a
description of the vocal style. (extra credit if you dress the part too)
4. Write a 2 page essay on how the invention of recording and radio, led to the growth of
early music.
5. Answer one of the following questions in a 2 page report giving at least three supporting
facts from the chapter.
a. How did WWII inadvertently cause the widespread popularity of Country &
Western?
b. How did the end of WWII, continue to support the growth and acceptance of
Country & Western?
