Missouri Research Data Center Doctoral Fellowship
Description
Consistent with MU’s teaching mission and in order to train the next generation of researchers
in large survey data research, the Population, Education, and Health Center at the University of
Missouri will provide support for up to two doctoral students to conduct research using Census
Research Data Center data products. Students must be nominated by their academic advisors.
Eligible projects include a faculty-initiated project or a student dissertation and must require the
use of restricted data only available through the Census RDC. Doctoral student applications will
be evaluated on project relevance and feasibility for RDC approval and advisor recommendation
of the applicant. The Missouri Census RDC Doctoral Fellowship includes a $25,000 stipend for
the academic year (August-May), with tuition remission to be provided by the Graduate School.
Eligibility
Doctoral students in good standing in an academic program at the University of Missouri may
submit applications. Successful applicants are likely to be students who are in at least the
second year of their program at the time of application. Note: Academic departments may
nominate more than one student.
Application Procedure
Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellowships will be awarded on an annual basis. Program
nominations for academic year 2015-2016 are due by March 6, 2015. Funds will be awarded
in April. Applicants should submit all of the requested materials to their advisor or
department chair well in advance of the application deadline. The completed
nomination/application should be submitted electronically by the doctoral student’s program
office to the Population, Education, and Health Center no later than 5 p.m. on March 6,
2015.

Spring 2015 Call for Proposals
Application Requirements
The application should include a letter in which the student describes their academic and
research plans, including the project to be completed using RDC data; a C.V.; a current
transcript; a completed fellowship form (attached); and a statement of the student's
satisfactory progress in their graduate program from the director of graduate studies or the
student’s academic adviser. A letter of recommendation from the academic advisor who will
oversee the project is a critical component as well. The student letter should be no more
than three single-spaced pages and include a discussion of the research topic and literature,
the significance of the project, and the methods that will be used.
RDC Information Sessions
RDC informational sessions are offered through the MU Population, Education, and Health
Center in both the spring and the fall. Applicants for fall 2015 funding should attend the
“Student Research Opportunities Available through the Census RDC” informational session on
January 29, 2015 or February 25th in Middlebush 111 from 1-2pm. Additional information can
be obtained by request from muprovostpehc@missouri.edu.
Expectations of Award Recipients
Award recipients are expected to complete the RDC proposal process by June 2015 so that
research may begin in Fall 2015. All PEHC doctoral fellows will be asked to provide follow-up
information on grant proposals, research presentations, working papers, publications, etc.
resulting from the project. All presentations and publications resulting from the funding
should acknowledge support from the Population, Education, and Health Center and the
Research Data Center at University of Missouri. Presentations and publications must also be
submitted to PEHC and may be posted on the PEHC website.
Terms of Funding
1. Applicants must be full-time graduate students in good standing with an academic unit within
the University of Missouri-Columbia.
2. In line with Census criteria, funded scholars who are granted use of restricted data are
expected to complete at least one paper from the project suitable for academic publication. A
paper will be due to the Center within six months of the completion of the project, and will
be posted as a working paper on the Center’s public website.
Selection Criteria
Funds will be awarded based on the following criteria:
1. Potential for the research to contribute to knowledge of relevant demographic, education,
and health problems and policy solutions.
2. Likelihood of the project resulting in successful application for access to the RDC data.
3. Academic record of the applicant and qualifications of the advisor.
