Population, Education, and Health Center Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellowships Call for Proposals Applications due March 6, 2015 Submit to muprovostpehc@missouri.edu Population, Education, and Health Center Missouri Research Data Center Doctoral Fellowship Description Consistent with MU’s teaching mission and in order to train the next generation of researchers in large survey data research, the Population, Education, and Health Center at the University of Missouri will provide support for up to two doctoral students to conduct research using Census Research Data Center data products. Students must be nominated by their academic advisors. Eligible projects include a faculty-initiated project or a student dissertation and must require the use of restricted data only available through the Census RDC. Doctoral student applications will be evaluated on project relevance and feasibility for RDC approval and advisor recommendation of the applicant. The Missouri Census RDC Doctoral Fellowship includes a $25,000 stipend for the academic year (August-May), with tuition remission to be provided by the Graduate School. Eligibility Doctoral students in good standing in an academic program at the University of Missouri may submit applications. Successful applicants are likely to be students who are in at least the second year of their program at the time of application. Note: Academic departments may nominate more than one student. Application Procedure Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellowships will be awarded on an annual basis. Program nominations for academic year 2015-2016 are due by March 6, 2015. Funds will be awarded in April. Applicants should submit all of the requested materials to their advisor or department chair well in advance of the application deadline. The completed nomination/application should be submitted electronically by the doctoral student’s program office to the Population, Education, and Health Center no later than 5 p.m. on March 6, 2015. PEHC Research Data Center Doctoral Fellowship Spring 2015 Call for Proposals Application Requirements The application should include a letter in which the student describes their academic and research plans, including the project to be completed using RDC data; a C.V.; a current transcript; a completed fellowship form (attached); and a statement of the student's satisfactory progress in their graduate program from the director of graduate studies or the student’s academic adviser. A letter of recommendation from the academic advisor who will oversee the project is a critical component as well. The student letter should be no more than three single-spaced pages and include a discussion of the research topic and literature, the significance of the project, and the methods that will be used. RDC Information Sessions RDC informational sessions are offered through the MU Population, Education, and Health Center in both the spring and the fall. Applicants for fall 2015 funding should attend the “Student Research Opportunities Available through the Census RDC” informational session on January 29, 2015 or February 25th in Middlebush 111 from 1-2pm. Expectations of Award Recipients Award recipients are expected to complete the RDC proposal process by June 2015 so that research may begin in Fall 2015. All PEHC doctoral fellows will be asked to provide follow-up information on grant proposals, research presentations, working papers, publications, etc. resulting from the project. All presentations and publications resulting from the funding should acknowledge support from the Population, Education, and Health Center and the Research Data Center at University of Missouri. Presentations and publications must also be submitted to PEHC and may be posted on the PEHC website. Terms of Funding 1. Applicants must be full-time graduate students in good standing with an academic unit within the University of Missouri-Columbia. 2. In line with Census criteria, funded scholars who are granted use of restricted data are expected to complete at least one paper from the project suitable for academic publication. A paper will be due to the Center within six months of the completion of the project, and will be posted as a working paper on the Center’s public website. Selection Criteria Funds will be awarded based on the following criteria: 1. Potential for the research to contribute to knowledge of relevant demographic, education, and health problems and policy solutions. 2. Likelihood of the project resulting in successful application for access to the RDC data. 3. Academic record of the applicant and qualifications of the advisor.
