The unique and amazing characteristics of our many
indigenous land-based bird varieties are world-renowned.
How well do we ourselves know our native birds?
It’s not easy to closely observe birds. Sudden fright
produces instant flight! The camera fixes a momentary
scene-flash into a studiable image.
Familiarise yourself with our famous and fabulous
feathered friends of field and forest, both flying and
flightless.

BIRDSaPLENTY 2012
As part of the 2012 BIRDSaPLENTY Festival Te Kōputu a te
whanga a Toi – Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre is
proud to co- host two exhibitions:
Nigel Brown – The Short Lives of Birds
31 August – 4 November 2012
The Sheaff Family Gallery
"Birds don't exist in isolation in these paintings but are related
to humans. They retain their own identities but often have
symbolic implications... The works are about creating a
mythology and making commentary". -Nigel Brown
Mandy Hague – Ex Ovo
6 September – 4 November 2102
The Whakatāne Community Board Gallery
Ex Ovo is an exhibition that signals a radical change in direction
for the Whakatane artist. The large works have developed in
response to explorations in materiality,
The works in Ex Ovo track the progress from pure materiality
to something more considered, as represented in the work The
Grade. The Grade is a collection of nine dozen hens eggs
covering the range from perfect to seriously deformed.
“Initially I had to take some huge steps backwards and explore
the materials in their own right. I was thinking about their
qualities and how we respond to them. It’s not about the
material representing anything else so in a way it was like going
back to the egg, starting anew.” – Mandy Hague
