Nightly Spelling Homework Assignments Each assignment is worth 3 points and counts toward your English grade; in order to receive full credit, you must have the assignment ready at the start of class the following day. Research shows that you must use a new word between seventeen and twenty times in order to permanently add it to your linguistic data pool. Work to use your new words each week, and they will become a part of your daily vocabulary. Monday Night Write each spelling word three times using three different colors or ‘fonts’. Write them in the boxes labeled Spelling Word on the back of your spelling paper. Tuesday Night Complete the Synonym and Antonym sections for each word on the back of your spelling paper. Wednesday Night Figure out a mnemonic device for five of the spelling words. (A mnemonic device is simply a learning technique or trick to help you remember something. For example, Roy G. BIV stands for red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.) Write a brief explanation of your mnemonic device on your spelling paper and be ready to explain it in class. Thursday Night Study for tomorrow’s spelling test. Use the mnemonic devices learned in class to help you remember how to spell and use each word.
