Recycle mercury items, batteries, used cooking oil, yard signs in Aurora this month
November means turkey and a chance to give thanks
—including thanking Mother Earth by taking advantage of several recycling opportunities coming up in Aurora.
Once the election season wraps up, don’t just toss those political yard signs in the trash. Instead, take the signs to one of Aurora’s two single-stream recycling drop-off sites to recycle them.
The locations are: Central Facilities Center, 13646 E. Ellsworth Ave. (on the south side of the city’s
Wastewater/Stormwater lot) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; or Saddle Rock Golf Maintenance
Center, 21705 E. Arapahoe Road (across the street from the golf course) from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through
Friday.
On America Recycles Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Central Facilities Center, residents also may drop off mercury-containing devices such as barometers, jars and containers as well as alkaline batteries for safe and proper recycling. Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) and fluorescent tubes will not be accepted.
Finally, for those who enjoy a little fried turkey on Thanksgiving, the city of Aurora is participating in the annual
Holiday recycOil® 2012 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 24 at Fire Station No. 9, 17200 E. Mexico Ave.
The free event, presented by the Rocky Mountain Sustainable Enterprises, is designed to divert waste fryer oil from municipal water systems and landfills and convert it into biodiesel. Recycling the oil helps reduce the costs associated with household and municipal sewer maintenance and the pollution of river eco-systems and underground water resources.
Both Aurora residents and non-residents may participate, and coordinators ask that the oil be brought for recycling in liquid form so that it may be poured easily into collection drums. For a complete list of collection sites in the metro area, visit www.recycoil.com
or call 303-544-1500.
