BUGL BORTH /BORTH BUGLE CHWEFROR/ FEBRUARY 2014 Croeso/Welcome My latest musing takes place to a background of bad weather, postponed games, 6 Nations kick offs at strange times, WRU & Regions arguing about money etc. We have to be fairly optimistic to support rugby in general and Menai Bridge in particular- no gain without pain!! Our last home game was on 21st December and our last competitive game in the middle of January against Llandudno away in the last 32 of the SWALEC Bowl. Currently we lie in third place in the North Wales Division 3 League having played 9 games and amassed 37 points. The two teams above us have played 13 and 10 games. None of our games at home have been lost due to the wet weather, most have been away or on SWALEC cup competition.dates. We are still in the Gwynedd Cup and North Wales Bowl due to play Bethesda and Shotton respectively. So, from now to the end of the season we will be playing catch up. The next games for Bridge are Llanidloes (currently top of the league) at home this Saturday 22nd with a 2.30 kick off: Holyhead away on 1st March: Welshpool home on 8th March The clubhouse will be open to watch the Wales game against France, Friday 21st Feb 8 pm kick off. On Sunday 9th March there will be a working group carrying out essential maintenance to the clubhouse and fields followed by watching the England v Wales game on TV at 3 pm. Free roast beef rolls for all volunteer workers After that it will be the final game of the 6 Nations against Scotland 15th March with a 2.45 kick off, Sponsorship- There exists opportunities for local companies to advertise in the match day programme or on the web site. Please contact your correspondent 100 CLUB- £5 per month, with the chance to win £400 at Christmas and £100 & £50 every month. Join and you can also apply for international tickets to all Wales home games The Big Conversation at the moment is ‘ Where will the next generation of players emerge from? as schools are playing less rugby and children & parents are leading busy lives distant from rugby pitches and clubhouses’. Any thoughts? E-mail to address below I am always on the lookout for photographs and stories of blood spilt in the cause of Bridge rugby and after match hospitality. E-mail them to douglasbarnes@hotmail.co.uk BYEGONE DAYS In May 1986 we had an end of season tour to Somerset, about 13 or 14 of us made the trip and were assisted by some guest players including Mike Halstead's brother Anthony in our two games. The photographs show who went but the team photo taken on the Sunday morning is: Back row L to R Dave Vickers, Guest, Bryn Bonkers Owen, Paul Hibbert, Neil Patrick, Tim Roberts, John "Chink"Evans, Brian Griffiths, Mike Halstead, Mike's brother Front row L to R Wil Elphick, Richard Peberdy, Guest, Andy Brogden, Dafydd Hardy, Guest. John Evans "RAF" must have taken the photo but he's on the group photo. Notable on the trip was Dave Vickers' eating prowess, he had a "lunch box" made up but had demolished it before we reached Llyn Ogwen!!! We stayed in Taunton in a tatty guest house, on the Friday night we all got trashed so were not in good form to play Burnham on Sea 3rds on the Saturday. Still the alcohol did something as we beat them 35-0 with all the tries from the forwards, Bryn Owen, Neil Patrick, John Evans got 2 and Rich Peberdy, Geoff Senogles kicked 5 conversions! On the Sunday morning we played a Wyvern 15 and lost 9-5 Geoff Senogles scoring our only try. Before leaving the boys purchased some farmhouse cider before we left Somerset, which made the coach trip home "Interesting"! Incidentally on the same Saturday we put out a second team against a Bethesda 3rd team, MB bolstered by a few 1st teamers who did not go on tour won scoring 6 tries, from Geraint Lewis, Steve Jones, Rich Thomas, Ian Owen (2) and Jonathan Elbeck, Brian Pritchard kicked two conversions. Special thanks to Bryn “Bonkers“ Owen, our former captain & chairman, who supplied the photographs and information Do you have anything similar lurking in your attic?
