I will teach on a power point or the board at first. After I have lectured on the topic I plan on going to SHOWME and making my presentation on America of what we learned that day. After that the student’s will go research and make their presentation based on similar topics of their own choice countries. If they do not finish it will be homework. The Week theme will be: Holidays in America Compared to Other Countries! Monday: Discuss the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Who was there? (Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams). What holiday do we celebrate for it? (Fourth of July) What are some of the customs of the holiday? (Fire Works, BBQ, Apple Pie) After class discussion turn in to a show me presentation of America. Explain assignment and have each student pick a country they want to study. Have them research that countries independence day and compare the traditions of that country to America’s customs. Tuesday: Discuss Veterans Day how it came to be in 1919 by President Wilson and other names for the holiday like Armistice Day. Explain that it is on November 11th and that it celebrates all men and women who have fought for America’s freedom in the past and the present. Add on to previous presentation from Monday. Add veterans day and different symbols that represent the holiday. Have student’s research a possible holiday that their country celebrates their soldiers. If there is not one have them present on their countries soldiers or a holiday in which they remember people. Wednesday: Discuss Memorial Day and the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Explain that Memorial Day honors all men and women who have died serving the country. Add on to previous presentation. Include symbols of this holiday as well. Students can use this day as a make-up day to catch up on presentations. Additionally I will ask student’s to make a slide here that includes a notes section…. They will fill in this note section on what they think is the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day in America. I will use this as an assessment of what they have learned so far. Thursday: This day will be spent learning about George Washington and how he was the first president of the United States. This presentation will include the definition of president what the job of president includes and any additional information. Add on to previous presentation. Include picture of George Washington the definition of president and what he is famous for. In the presentation also include current president. Discipline-specific Project EDUC 2332 Anna Amy Fall 2013 Professor Ruelas Students will research their choice country and find the leader of their country. They will put a picture as well as their name and what their job title is: King, Queen, President, Prime Minister ETC…. Friday: On this day the lesson will be about a fun topic! This is a way to end the unit as well as make the project more engaging! For America I will show different symbols including the flag, the money, the eagle, and the Statue of Liberty. I will incorporate these into my presentation. Once the entire presentation is done. I will play it for the students so that they realize what is expected of their final projects. Students will add symbols of their countries to the end of their presentation. They will be able to take this project home for homework over the weekend. The following Monday they will present their SHOWME presentations! 2nd Monday: Presentations! Assessment of Student Learning: The assessment for this project will be the finished product of their presentations. Throughout the week I will be walking around as they are doing their research to make sure they understand. Wednesday since it is a catch-up day I will be able to tell what I should go back over or what they don’t understand. On the second Monday, after the presentations I will ask a series of questions to make sure they grasp the ideas of my presentation. Additional notes: Some students will not want to present because they are shy. In this case I would ask for them to come to my desk later on to show me what they have made. If that is not an ideal situation I will then go ahead and show the presentation for them asking questions as I go through to engage their participation. This activity involves multiple different learning styles including kinesthetic, linguistic, and logical.
