Lesson Plan 1st Grade
There was an old Lady who Swallowed some Leaves - by Lucille Colandro
Materials: Book listed above, iPad, pencils,
graphic organizer, crayons
Content Objectives:
Language Objectives:
This lesson is designed for 1st grade, either
whole class or small group. Students will
listen to the story “There was an old Lady who
Swallowed some Leaves!” by Lucille
Colandro.
1. Students will be able to define, apply,
and produce sentences with tiered
vocabulary. Tiered vocabulary will be
taught using a modified Seven Steps for
Teaching Vocabulary.
-Students will be able to identify the setting of
the story, including the season
2. Students will observe and listen to
teacher model metacognitive processes
of reading using Think Aloud strategies.
-Students will be able to identify and describe
some things they see in Fall.
-Students will know that the story’s genre is
fiction.
-Students will be able to use vocabulary words
in a sentence.
-Students will complete a visual timeline of
events in the story using time order words.
3. Students will view photo on the
Internet of actual objects that are
depicted in the story.
4. While reading the story, we will pause
for students to Turn and Talk to their
partner about what they think the items
mentioned in the story might be used
for. “What could we make out of all
these items?”
5. Students will use attached graphic
organizer to learn time order words and
to create a picture dictionary of items in
the story.

Lesson Sequence:
Teacher will assess prior knowledge of other
books in the series posing the question, “Have
you ever heard any other stories where the old
lady swallows a lot of things?” “Does this
remind you of any other story?”

Oral Assessment
Students take turns answering orally in a
complete sentence one of the items the old lady
swallowed. Give assistance in using new
transition words when needed.
Extension Activity
Student create their own version of a new book
for the series. Try this The Old Lady Leaves
book1.pdf resource. It is a small booklet with
sentence starters and pictures. It is done by
Kindergarten and First Grade Fever, a blog by
Chrissie online.
Students draw a small picture of leaves in the
first box of their graphic organizer. Give
students turns to write the particular word on
the iPad, so student can learn correct spelling.
Discuss various spelling concepts that appear
in each word. Progress through all steps using
the time order words.
Use Book Creator app for students to write
their own story after making a plan on
Fundations Journal paper. Give students turns
typing in their sentences. Reread their
passages for fluency and record audio.
Students create their own graphic organizer.
Publish their new book on the iPad using Book
Creator.
