UNDERSTANDING OF SOILS THROUGH TESTING
How can you know the proper fertilizer needs of your soil? Soil testing can be a valuable tool in determining the current
condition and needs of your soil. This will result in a more efficient fertilization program and better growing!
The Ohio Earth Food soil analysis program is designed to give you scientific knowledge in an easily understood manner
to help you make decisions about your farm, garden, or lawn fertilization program. Follow the directions below on how to
take a proper soil sample, then simply mail in your dirt with $15 for the basic test and an additional $15 if you would like
to receive the micronutrient package.
With the basic analysis you will see the organic matter content, the pH, available levels of Calcium, Magnesium,
Potassium, Phosphorus, the CEC (Cation Exchange Capacity or how much Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium and Sodium
it can hold) and the base exchange capacity (how much it is holding now). Recommendations to balance the soil will be
given using our natural fertilizers and oil amendments.
The Micronutrient package will provide additional results on levels of Iron, Copper, Manganese, Boron, Sulfur and Zinc.
SOIL SAMPLING
One test should be done per garden or up to 5 acres of field. In each selected test area take samples from 5-10 different
areas increasing in number based on the size of the garden. For each sample clean off plant residue and dig a spade in 4 to
6”. Remove the scoop then take a thin slice of the edge of the hole so that there is an equal amount of soil form all depths.
Mix all samples from each area into a clean bucket. Take 2 cups of soil out and place them in a clean plastic bag. If you
are doing multiple areas label each bag with something that you will remember and note that name in the form below. If
soil is wet allow it to air dry in the bucket before bagging.
