Position Description
Description
The Graduate Assistant for the Students Exploring to Expand Knowledge (SEEK) Learning Community (LC) for Western
Kentucky University’s Exploratory/Generally Undeclared students is responsible for coordinating a comprehensive array of
programs and services to support the academic and professional success of the LC students. Functions of the LC Graduate
Assistant include; coordinating and promoting activities, communicating effectively with students, Academic Advising and
Retention Center (AARC) Academic Advisor(s), and faculty for student success. Gathering data and assessment of LC success
will be an essential part of this position. This position reports to: Londa Holder, Academic Advisor, AARC.
Essential Responsibilities
1) Increase Student Learning
a. Coordinate activities that enhance and engage the students in academic endeavors.
b. Familiarize students with tools that will promote academic success (tutors, Peer Assisted Study Sessions,
Career Services Center, etc.).
2) Develop the Student Population
a. Plan, implement and evaluate activities for the LC that engage the students with faculty, professionals, and
other students.
b. Promote and recognize the academic achievements of LC students.
c. Encourage and support student’s individual development, to include leadership and service learning activities.
3) Serve as liaison to Faculty in conjunction with an AARC professional staff member.
a. Organize monthly meetings of faculty involved with linked courses.
b. Provide support to faculty when needed – keeping them involved in activities and scheduling rooms.
4) Enhance Responsiveness to Constituents
a. Collaborate and coordinate events/activities with the LC Steering Committee.
b. Communicate with students, project faculty, parents and other involved parties regarding the planning and
implementation of activities.
5) Improve Institutional Effectiveness
a. Work with SEEK committee to design and implement an assessment plan.
b. Provide supervisor with end of the year report that describes the LC’s successes and improvement needs. The
report should include a description of the years events and all implementation strategies.
c. Evaluate and disseminate information about the LC for continual improvement and for state, regional, and
national presentations.
Essential Qualifications
- Full-Time WKU Graduate Student
- Initiative to start new projects and ability to follow through to completion
- Represent AARC/UE at events
- Ability to speak publically with strong interpersonal communication skills
- Knowledge of technology with web based skills (LC website needs updating, but programming knowledge is not
necessary)
- Detail oriented and able to organize events
- Ability to connect students with resources for academic success
- Flexible schedule, as events will often be night and weekend events.
Salary: $10,000 per year
