January 16th-GPSO Meeting 1. Folklore and Ethnomusicology-need extra money because the IMU is going to cater. They need approval to change from the original proposal of purchasing bagels from Bloomington Bagel Company to purchasing food from the IMU. Amanda stated we should tell this group that they are allowed to bring food into the GradPad. 2. Conference Proposal (last week of March)- preliminary plan during the graduate appreciation week. There are a total of 6 aims for the conference proposal. a. Contest to award professional and graduate students at $100.00 for 3 separate elements b. 5-$50 book scholarships c. Short presentations from travel grant awardees d. Presentation lectures from the current faculty award e. Academic fair to show the different kinds of research and signs that invite attendees to ask questions related to the questions f. Establish a fund to give travel grants for unrepresented minorities that are interested in attending IU for graduate school g. Joint GPSO/OWA panel for interview assistance h. Discussion of room in the IMU-Peter will look into this. 3. Mentoring a. Mentoring program that would target 20 undergraduate students that are interested in graduate school. Extension of the function between the graduate student mentors and undergraduates? 4. Staff Positions a. Csilla’s position – operations coordinator position / assistant communications communicator which would be an hourly position. There would be an increase for the summer staff positions in addition to the other positions. b. Discussion regarding the hiring of the positions for GPSO. Should there be a committee for hiring? c. Advertise the position and we can discuss d. Peter was selected as the Events Coordinator 5. SAO support-mentoring program a. Student Activities Organization-there are two requirements: 1) the treasurer needs to sign the account form and 2) we need a letter from Yolanda that would require a signature for the account b. Also need a letter from the chairperson of the academic department and we need to get that from James along with a copy of the constitution. c. Might not accept us because we accept student fees from the university and they might deny us the access. 6. Officer Reports a. Representative Handbook-done and will be sent out to Excomm and then sent out to the assembly b. Educational Policy Meeting-there is something that is going on with the BFC that we don’t know about. c. Resolution to move the late fees back a week and Nicks thinks that it is going to past. d. Disbursement of travel grants-there was only one person that didn’t get their money. e. Leslie has been working with Mike about the travel grants. The information regarding the application process is now on the website. Csilla commented that we should let applicants know that they are writing for reviewers that are not for professionals in their field.
