Good Morning ~ Jan 22th 2014 I have made some changes to this that I hope you take a second to read. ****First I apologize for the duplicate home works for 2 days this week. Valentine’s Party is on an early dismissal day, so the party is switched to Noon! (While I’m on that topic, if you happen to do things WAY ahead of time, please do NOT do Valentine’s cards for the class. This will actually be part of their homework the week before Valentine’s Day! You are welcome to buy them, but please don’t let them fill them out yet.) Unit: The Solar System This week we are studying about Mercury. Characteristics of Mercury: Inner planet Closest planet to the sun Second smallest planet No living things No water Hard to see with a telescope ~Paper Mache Planets~ In 2 weeks, the week of the February 3rd &10th, we will begin making our Paper Mache planets by putting a first layer on Wednesday the 5th from 9-10. We will let them dry for a couple days and put a second layer on Friday, the 7th from 9:30-10:30. We will paint the following Monday and Wednesday at 9am! Please email me if you can come in to help on any or all of the days! You are also welcome to send in a note containing the time and day you would like to help! There are 28 kids and 10 different rolling objects to make, so I’d really like to have 10 parents each day! (please plan on coming 15 min early and staying 10-15 minutes later.) If you are capable of doing multiple days, please be sure to note that in your emails! I will send a final schedule home next week so everyone knows where to be and when! We will also be adding Monday the 4th to paint the planets! Finally, please send in a shirt your child can wear, that you don’t care if it gets messy! Email me any or all of the dates you can come in: Wednesday the 5th at 9am Friday the th 7th at 9:30 am Monday the 10th at 9am Wednesday the 12th at 9am Thanks again! Handwriting These are the letters we have accomplished and the students should be writing them with super accuracy! L l d C c I i T t O o A a D E e F f U u S s Language Arts I will be testing the students on their sight words next week, so please be sure you go over them a few times to be sure they are ready! You may also here the students talking about blends and clusters in the next few weeks. One of the areas of our calendar period is Language Arts, where we write the events for the day. From these events I pull out a spelling or language lesson for the day. For example; the last few weeks we really focused on end marks ( . =periods, ?= question marks and !=excited marks). This week did our very first blend of “st.” A blend is when 2 letters go together but don’t lose their identities. We also did diagraphs or clusters like, the “h” brothers: sh, th, wh, ch with the speech teacher on Wednesday. This is when 2 letters grouped together make a whole new sound! Each day we will do so little activity with these groupings and hopefully the students will not have to struggle to come up with both letters while spelling. We have conquered s + t = “st” /p + l = “pl” / b + r = “br”! Library We will not be having library this week because of the Catholic Schools Week activities. Please send in books as usual and I will try to check out books for the students that have returned them. Religion EVERYTHING is religion….It’s Catholic Schools Week!!!
