Race Director, Outer Banks Sporting Events
Outer Banks Sporting Events (OBSE) is seeking a dynamic self-starter who can serve in the capacity of
Race Director (RD) for a community-oriented nonprofit organization whose mission is to organize and
promote national and international amateur sports competition and healthy living lifestyles, provide
financial support for local public education and local citizens in need while contributing to the economic
impact for the Outer Banks of North Carolina.. OBSE raises funds to support two local non-profit
organizations- The Dare Education Foundation and Outer Banks Relief Foundation.
The RD helps provide the overall vision, direction and oversight of OBSE’s races and events in
coordination with the Executive Director (ED), Staff, Event Organizing Committees and Committee
Chairs, in accordance with the standards and policies established by the OBSE Board of Directors. The
Race Director will work with the ED regarding the non-profit and administrative components of OBSE.
The RD will work with Staff and Committee Chairs, including but not limited to marketing, fundraising,
hospitality, logistics, human resources, volunteers and government liaison to develop and implement OBSE
event and race plans.
The RD must have proven success in event planning, management and coordination, strong analytical and
problem-solving skills, an attention to detail, excellent written and verbal communications skills, success in
working with volunteers, and be proficient in Microsoft Office, database management (i.e. MS Excel,
spreadsheets). The RD must be a team player with a healthy, positive, can-do attitude.
Working and promoting OBSE events and races will require working overtime near event time as well as
several race event weekends per year.
Essential Job Functions (Roles and Responsibilities) of the OBSE Event/Race Director
Race Direction – The Race Director will plan and execute all major OBSE events: a fall marathon/ half
marathon/8K,5K and fun run; a spring half marathon/5K/fun run; and a triathlon series and an adventure
race and obstacle course on the beach. Events are to be planned during off-season times of the year, with
courses set to accommodate large numbers of runners (2500+), and marketed/promoted to a national
audience for significant impact on local economic development. Race direction is to include, but not
limited to, coordination with staff, key organizational committee chairs and team leaders, event budget
management, course development and maps, government/public safety partnerships, permit applications,
elites, prize purses, RRCA/USATF/USAT, etc., timing & scoring, transportation, course marking and aide
stations, public safety, NCDOT, medals/awards, participant shirts, insurance, permits, event volunteers, etc.
The Race Director is responsible for negotiating bids and pricing for event timing, medals, and all
equipment and supplies that support the event races.
Budget Development – Race Director will give input into the development of the OBSE annual budget for
approval by the OBSE Board of Directors. Race Director will submit race related requests and information
to the ED which will facilitate the event budget development. The RD will help manage the event logistics
and race budgets and provide detailed reports to the ED and OBSE Treasurer and give summary reports to
the OBSE Board of Directors at their regular BOD meetings.
Organization and Event Promotion – The Race Director has input in promoting OBSE and all OBSE
events in coordination with the Marketing Coordinator and committee.
Fundraising/Sponsor Development and Relations – Race Director will work in coordination with the
Fundraising/Development Committee/Chair to help in the development of all cash and in-kind sponsor
commitments to help meet event requirements and budget projections.
Warehouse and Inventory- Race Director is responsible for organizing and inventorying OBSE’s event
collateral materials and equipment in a timely manner prior to and following each event. The Race Director
will maintain a safe and organized environment within the warehouse in order to facilitate timely access of
materials and to expedite event staging. The Race Director will provide updated inventory information and
help manage the warehouse and collateral database.
Volunteers – Race Director is responsible for working with the Staff, the Volunteer Coordinator and the
Event Organizing Committee (EOC) to help recruit and train all event volunteers with particular attention
to race course and logistics volunteers for all OBSE events, while paying particular attention to the safety
and hospitality of all event volunteers.
Record Keeping - The Race Director is the primary person responsible for maintaining the official records
and files of the OBSE race events. The Race Director will assure that detailed records in the form of paperbased files and/or electronic files for all events which will include notes from all OBSE Logistics
Committee Meetings, collateral materials, maps, databases, spreadsheets, rosters, inventories, etc. The RD
will assure that all event records are well organized and readily accessible.
Public Relations – Race Director will help represent OBSE events and engage in public relations activities
that establish OBSE as a prominent force in the economic development, non-profit, as well as athletic,
recreation and sports sectors of the Outer Banks community and beyond.
Youth and Community Athletic Development and Healthy Living Activities – Secondary to the key
events listed under Race Direction, the Race Director will help build and maintain capacity and plan for
future youth athletic development and healthy living activities and lifestyle choices.
Communication/Professionalism/Public Relations- The Race Director will make every effort to work
cooperatively and effectively with OBSE Employees, members of the OBSE Board, Event Organizing
Committees and Event Volunteers to help operationalize the vision and goals of OBSE. The Employee will
maintain a professional and efficient work attitude, as well as a sense of being a team player while
continuing to grow both personally and professionally.
Other – The Race Director will engage in any and all additional activities that will contribute to the
success of OBSE as directed by the Executive Director and in accordance with polices set forth by the
OBSE Board of Directors.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: BA/BS- 4 year college degree required
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 3 years race direction, non-profit/event planning/management experience or
similar organizational experience.
SALARY RANGE: $40,000-$45,000 based on qualifications and experience
