Tri-Conference

Salina, Kansas

April 7, 1999, 2:45pm

MINUTES

Present: Nancy Malone, Central College; Rowena Olsen, McPherson College; Max Burson, Friends University; Greg Zuck, Southwestern College; Kay

Kennedy, Sterling College; David Pappas, Friends University; Sylvia Kuhlmeier, Tabor College; Margaret Wiebe, Hesston College; Jane Ann Nelson,

Ottawa University; Jan Lee, Ottawa University; Ruth Cox, Kansas Wesleyan University; Joseph Forte, Newman University; Dolores Hill, Brown Mackie

College, Salina; Gail Stucky, Bethel College; John Stratton, Bethany College

Sylvia Kuhlmeier, Chairperson, welcomed all to the meeting and had all attending introduce themselves.

Sylvia asked for corrections to the minutes from the January 22, 1999 meeting. In the third paragraph of the minutes, Sylvia's last name should be

Kuhlmeier. On the directory corrections list the first correction is in error. All Baker email addresses must have the harvey except Anne Liebst's. For

Southwestern, Theresa Thurman-Zuck has been replaced by Mira Greene, mgreene@jinx.sckans.edu, and Terry Quiett is now the Coordinator of

Academic Technology. At Friends, Ann Crane has taken Mira Greene's place and Cheryl's last name is spelled Gallardo. With these corrections, Jane

Ann Nelson moved that the minutes be approved and Ruth Cox seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Margaret Wiebe, Secretary/Treasurer, reported that there is $758.64 in the PAL treasury and 33 members.

Nancy Malone reported from the Nominating Committee that Rowena Olsen will represent us on the Kansas Reference Committee. Gail Stucky was elected as Secretary/Treasurer for two years, and Kay Bradt, Joe Forte, and Ray Morrison are the new Nominating Committee. Joe Forte will serve as chair. Those attending agreed that elections should continue via email and that those voting should be paid PAL members.

REPORTS

Kansas Library Network Board -- Greg Zuck handed out a written report.

LSTA -- Sylvia Kuhlmeier reported from the February 19, 1999 LSTA meeting that six libraries have been funded with a special population LSTA grant.

She encouraged PAL libraries to apply for such a grant -- ADA structural changes are allowed for such a grant. The technology grant will be awarded in

January 2000. Applications will be available in October, 1999.

Sylvia reported that there were no applications from library staff to attend KLA. There was discussion as to whether this grant for staff should be broadened and include any conference of interest or in an area of person's work and not be limited to just KLA. Max Burson moved that the grant should be awarded to attend any Kansas conference or workshop that is library associated and that has a registration fee. Ruth seconded the motion and then asked the question as to whether the amount should be limited to $50 or whether it should be only the registration fee. Ruth moved to amend the motion that the amount of the grant be up to $50 toward registration for one to two people each year. Jan Ann then indicated that Tri-Conference registration will most likely go up and wondered if we should limit the grant to $50. Greg Zuck called for the question on the amendment which passed unanimously. Jane Ann and David Pappas spoke in opposition to the first motion which included any library workshop, because the purpose of the grant is to connect library paraprofessionals to the conferences. Jane Ann amended the original motion to state that grants should be for any conference or workshop sponsored by KLA or any one of its official sections or roundtables. Rowena seconded the motion. Jan Lee called for the question and the motion passed unanimously -- PAL Conference grants for library paraprofessionals will be awarded in the amount of the conference registration up to $50 to attend any conference or workshop sponosored by KLA or one of its official sections or roundtables. Sylvia will work with Gail on getting application forms out to PAL libraries.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Rowena announced that Kay Kennedy was given the KLOA award this year. Kay is retiring from Sterling College at the end of this year. Rowena also asked that we remember JoAnn Johnson as she is in a life-threatening situation with an infection from a liver transplant.

Sylvia indicated that since time had run out, she will finish the listed agenda via email.

Respectfully submitted,

Margaret Wiebe

Secretary/Treasurer
