Minutes of the Board of Directors
February 10, 2014
Mission Statement: The purpose of the Placentia Library Friends Foundation is to assist the
Placentia’s Library District by raising funds to support and enhance its programs, activities and
capital projects, promote volunteer involvement, and provide educational and cultural
opportunities for its membership and library customers.

Call the Meeting To Order (Jo Ann Sowards, President)
A. Announcements- Jo Ann Sowards/President
1. New Recording Secretary- Lisa Pacheco
2. Strategic and Long Range Planning – How do we know if we are being
effective?
a. Recruitment and retention of volunteers— Ideas for building
relationships/Create a positive environment
- Collaboration amongst volunteers
- Make volunteers feel valued
- Partner with Judy Carmona and school district
- Respect fellow board members/avoid conflict
b. Plan for Volunteers Success
- Make members feel their job is important
- Match member skills to job
- Mentor new members
c. Recruitment/retention Challenges
- Draw in different age groups
- Avoid stereotyping/think broadly
- Have job descriptions for different offices
(already exists in the bylaws)

Discussion took place regarding flexibility and acceptance of each board
member’s approach to doing things. We agreed that we should be willing
to accept change and diversity. However, it is okay to question changes
and the effectiveness of them in a tactful and civil manner.

Approval of the Minutes Dated January 18. 2014
A. Jo Ann made a motion to approve the January 18, 2014 minutes as written. Brenda
seconded the motion. The motion carried.
III.
Old Business
A. Amendment to Bylaws, Standing Rule (Brenda Benner)
1. Add standing rule #1. In the event of the of the death of a spouse of a
Placentia Library Friends Board member or Placenta Library Trustees
member, a donation of $50.00 will be made to the charity of their choice.
a.
There should be limitations, and it should be left to the discretion of the
board on a case by case basis. Funds to come from PLFF treasury.
b. Brenda will rewrite the amendment to reflect concerns expressed by
the board members.
