Bovingdon & Flaunden Tennis Club www.bovingdontennisclub.co.uk July Newsletter I am writing this newsletter the morning after the 20th June Fun Day. It’s great to have already received such positive feedback, phone calls, and emails to add to the plaudits of yesterday. Whether we measure the success of the day based on number of people who attended, the number of people who joined in the various activities, potential new members, money raised or simply the enjoyment, we scored 100% on each count and really made the Club part of the local community. We have already had requests to make it an annual village event! At this point we need to single out some people for praise, Jane Gilmore, Jill Myers, Karen Ferguson and Jill Cohen for organising everyone and making it happen. Andy Ferguson, Jane Harding, Anne Duncan and Christine Mordue for serving endless supplies of food and drink. Nick and Tim for organising the various junior tournaments; Mike and Chris Chan for their superb demonstration of how the game can be played; Roy Smith for use of his van and Deborah Cullinan for lending us her ball machine, not forgetting Berkhamsted Sports for lending us loads of rackets to try. The season is now well underway with the Men’s A, Ladies B and Ladies Hot Rackets team top of their leagues. I understand from Roy and John that we are struggling to get regular players for both the Men’s B and Herts weekend teams. This is in part due to injuries and exams but without the commitment of our players we will find ourselves in a lower league next year. Good new on the Clubmark front, we are almost there! A little more work on getting more juniors competing and reporting results and we should get our accreditation, once this is awarded we can redouble our efforts for floodlighting. A reminder that social tennis is now Wednesday’s from 5.00pm to dusk - Saturday afternoons 2.00pm – 5.00pm, with Sunday mornings from 11.00am to 1.00pm. The Sunday sessions have been poorly supported over the Winter, so let’s try and make full use of the courts; once a regular group commit , Sunday’s will self perpetuate. Junior & Adult Coaching Tim Ineson (07985-412025) is reporting an increased demand for 1 hour and ½ hour individual lessons in addition to the very successful group Tuesday evening sessions. With the summer holidays fast approaching the current Saturday junior program is due to end on the 10th July with the next course starting from 11th September, it is likely that we will take this opportunity to move children into new groups (red to orange etc), you will be notified nearer the time, but in the meantime timings will continue as current: 09.00 am - 5/8 (red group – Beginners, Intermediate and Performance) 10.00 am - 8/9 (orange groups – Intermediate and Performance) 11.00 am - 10+ (green and yellow groups) In addition to our Saturday morning junior activities we are continuing our very successful Rusty Racket initiative at 9.00am. The majority of our new members have derived from these sessions and its encouraging to see so may new players signed up already. The response to the junior Summer Camp week commencing 9th August run by Tim is slow, so anyone wanting to give the kids more tennis should check out the details on the website and book with Tim. The draw for the various 2010 Club competitions has been made and will be communicated in the next few days. Website Can we remind all members that the best way to check what the Club is doing is by visiting our website. The site is kept up to date and in future will become the main communication vehicle to all existing and prospective members.
