Library Board Meeting Minutes January 7, 2008 MEMBERS PRESENT Janis Martin, Sharon Anderson, Elizabeth Ellson, Jane Ryan, Debbie Spitzer, Librarian Sharon Grossardt and City Administrator Nick Koverman MEMBERS ABSENT Jill Mueller, John Schaber President Janis Martin called the meeting to order at 6:35 pm. BOARD MINUTES The Board approved the minutes of the December 10, 2007 meeting on a motion by Debbie Spitzer, seconded by Jane Ryan. Motion declared carried. REPORTS FROM SELCO / FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY There have been no SELCO meetings since the December Board meeting. Friends will meet some time in the spring. FINANCIAL & CIRCULATION REPORTS The Petty Cash and Circulation reports for December were approved on a motion by Liz Ellson, seconded by Debbie Spitzer. Motion declared carried. ELECTION OF OFFICERS Janis Martin was nominated for President on a motion by Debbie Spitzer, seconded by Sharon Anderson. Motion declared carried. Debbie Spitzer was nominated for Vice-President on a motion by Liz Ellson, seconded by Jane Ryan. Motion declared carried. Sharon Anderson was nominated for Secretary on a motion by Jane Ryan, seconded by Liz Ellson. Motion declared carried. NEW LIBRARY BOARD MEMBER RECOMMENDATIONS Sharon Grossardt reported that two applications for Library Board were received. Jane Ryan made the motion, seconded by Debbie Spitzer, that Kathryn Phelps and Willa Olivier be recommended to City Council for appointment to the Library Board for 3-year terms. Motion declared carried. 2008 GOALS Goals for 2008 were discussed. We will carry over the 2007 goals, with modifications. PROGRAMMING “Hot Reads for Cold Nights,” the winter reading program for adults and teens, has begun and will run through mid-March. Participants receive treats for every four books they read. Weekly drawings for mugs and other prizes will be held. We will have a speaker on Thursday, January 24th as part of the Sustainable Rural Communities grant. The topic is “Minnesota’s Energy Future.” COMPREHENSIVE PLANNING SESSION City Administrator Nick Koverman encouraged everyone to attend the planning session on January 22nd. OTHER Librarian Grossardt called the Board’s attention to recent news on the SELCO website. SELCO has received a national grant to provide effective, unbiased investor education for member libraries. They will produce 13 programs in cooperation with public television station KSMQ. These will be broadcast and later provided to member libraries as DVDs. The “23 Thing on a Stick” program for library staff and trustees will launch later this month. This program will encourage familiarity and use of new and emerging technologies.
