Population connected to urban wastewater treatment plants with at
least secondary treatment
This indicator reflects the efforts of society to protect the environment from the unfavourable
effects of disposal of urban wastewater. The construction of sewage systems and modern
urban wastewater treatment plants requires high investment costs and time needed to build the
facilities.
With the increase in the number of urban wastewater treatment plants (from 51 in 2000 to 89
in 2014), increased the population served by treatment services. In 2014, the population living
in settlements connected to the urban wastewater treatment plants reached 56.8%, of which
54.8% with at least secondary treatment.
