Pesticide Action Network North America Position Title: Executive Director Client: Pesticide Action Network North America (http://www.panna.org/) Position Location: San Francisco, CA General Job Description Pesticide Action Network North America (PANNA) seeks an experienced and visionary professional for the position of Executive Director to provide leadership and oversee all program and administrative aspects of the organization. The Executive Director will report to the Board of Directors and lead the organization's accomplished staff of scientists, campaigners and communications, development and administrative staff as the organization implements its new strategic plan. She or he will have an exemplary track record in U.S. fundraising; campaigning and/or advocacy experience; proven program and coalition development skills; and strong personnel and financial management experience. Also required is experience with some aspects of PANNA's core issues which include: pesticides impacts and policy; sustainable agriculture and pest management; public and/or environmental health; farm worker advocacy; international development and related social, economic and environmental justice issues. The successful candidate must have strong issue expertise combined with excellent writing, strategic planning, and interpersonal, supervisory and political skills. Background should include significant non-profit administration at a high level of responsibility. Board development experience is highly desirable, as are multicultural experiences, either domestically or internationally. The Organization PAN North America (PANNA) is one of five regional organizations serving the global Pesticide Action Network of over 700 civil society groups in more than 100 countries. Located in San Francisco, PANNA has 22-25 full- and part-time staff and 3-6 volunteers and interns. Now on the cusp of its 25th anniversary, PAN has worked to replace pesticides with ecologically sound alternatives since 1982. PANNA links over 220 affiliated health, consumer, labor, environment, agriculture and other public interest groups in Canada , Mexico and the U.S. with thousands of supporters worldwide to promote healthier, more effective pest management. The organization's science-based advocacy includes research and analysis, policy development, public education, and media outreach to provide information about the harmful effects of pesticides and alternatives to their use. PANNA has conducted and participated in many effective campaigns in a variety of local, national and international arenas. As part of PAN International, PAN North America has a strong track record reducing and eliminating exposures to pesticides, including: PAN's Dirty Dozen Campaign, launched with global affiliates in 1985, resulted in bans and restrictions on many of the Dirty Dozen pesticides worldwide. The PAN-supported international treaty known as the Stockholm Convention was signed in 2001 and took effect in 2004, mandating global bans and phaseouts of several Dirty Dozen and other pesticides. PAN pioneered the concept of "prior informed consent" (PIC) that became international law in 1998 in the Rotterdam Convention. PIC empowers nations to resist pesticide dumping and importation of pesticides banned in their country of origin PANNA created the Drift Catcher, an air-monitoring device used by community groups to sample for pesticides in the air they breathe. As a founding member of Californians for Pesticide Reform, PANNA helped pass statewide "healthy schools" legislation in 2000 and 2002 that requires parent notification when pesticides are used at school, and helps schools convert to least-toxic pest management methods. Responsibilities 1. Organizational Vision: Provide leadership for long-term organizational vision and development. Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of an evolving program strategy 2. Public Relations: Primary PANNA spokesperson, working in tandem with staff experts, to all its constituencies, including PAN International, PANNA networks, the media and the broader pesticide reform, social justice, human rights, public health, international development and environmental communities. 3. Resource and Revenue Development: Primary responsibility for ensuring that longterm revenue goals are met. Maintain existing funding relationships and requirements, develop new sources and grow PAN North America revenue base. 4. Financial Management: Primary responsibility for overseeing PAN North America financial management, including asset and cash flow management, investments, oversight/supervision of bookkeeping, audits, and annual reports. 5. Administration: Lead the Management Council and assist Department Directors in developing and implementing departmental budget and planning processes. Promote ongoing staff development. Oversee negotiations and management of contracts with organizations and consultants. 6. Human Resources: Responsible for authorizing all staff hires, with direct supervision of Department Directors. Also responsible for setting high standards for staff performance, maintaining and implementing personnel policies, organizational hiring, and supervision practices. 7. Board Relations: Serve as primary liaison with the Board of Directors, serve or assign staff to work with Board committees, support the work of Board committees as needed, assist Board in recruiting and developing PANNA Board. Supervision and Office Relationships The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors conducts evaluation of the Executive Director at the end of the first six months of fulltime employment and at least annually thereafter. QUALIFICATIONS: The Hiring Committee will prefer candidates with experience and knowledge in the following areas, which are listed in priority order (first being most important): Proven ability to articulate and execute a program vision and a growth strategy; Successfully demonstrated senior leadership skills, with the ability to lead, stimulate, inspire and coach professionals; A demonstrated knowledge, insight and commitment to issues of the environment and public health; An effective advocate and spokesperson who can influence decision makers; Excellent networking and positioning skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with networks and coalitions; Able to promote a common purpose; Effectively and successfully manage people and resources with a collaborative and motivating management style; Able to effectively delegate; Strong oral and written communication skills; Have a reputation as a credible leader with integrity; A proficiency in fundraising, able to leverage capital for both operations and programs; Demonstrated financial skills; Minimum 7 - 10 years successful senior level management experience; and Bachelor's degree required, and graduate degree desired in a related field such as natural resources, public health, public administration or other related disciplines.
