Determining the heavy metals in the soil is an important task view resulting from the
toxic potential of some of these elements. Some centers of the Chemical Industry were
chosen, known as centers of pollution, at least until 2000. The samples were collected at three
sites. Each site was chosen in such a way to avoid places with active ground sliding or where
the probability of alluvial deposits is very high. Soil samples were collected from a depth of
5, 15 and 25 cm .
The analyses by ICP spectrometry was made in the EXPROGAZ MEDIAŞ laboratory
using an IRIS ADVANTAGE spectrometer. The data were processed in the first stage by the
THERMO SPEC\CID Research soft. Tthe preliminary qualitative analysis identified the most
frequent metals in the established sites. The quantitative analysis was done for metals with
known toxicity: Co, Cr, Pb, etc. For some of the samples, the results obtained by ICP
spectrometry have been confronted with the results obtained by NAA and AAS. The
concordance between them was excellent.
The determinations by ICP-OES spectrometry require a shorter time, among other
advantages. The results showed some high concentrations of these toxic metals.

According to the characteristics of the industrial activities at a particular site, the presence of
one or another element is greater or lower. Exceeding levels above the alert levels were found.
Some migration process towards to deep strata can also be noted.
