BSUSP Certificates and Concentrations

1. Certificate in Remote Sensing (RS) & Geographic Information Systems
Certificates, both basic and professional, are designed to support the needs of
students who require RS/GIS skills. These certificates demonstrate that the
student has a basic to advanced understanding of RS/GIS technology. Such
certificates can be highly valued for those who obtain them as they are often
required for entry level positions and can play a central role in career
advancement.

2. Certificate in Historic Preservation
Students with any academic background interested in gaining knowledge about
historic preservation may participate in the certificate program and take fifteen
credit hours from a selected list of courses. These courses may be taken for
credit and applied to a degree program in the Department of Planning and
Urban Studies (PLUS) or another academic area or may be taken as non-credit.
Upon completion of the required number of courses, students will receive a
certificate from PLUS. Coursework taken in the Historic Preservation Certificate
Program may provide the basis for an academic degree concentration or it may
prepare BSUSP graduates and community leaders for more effective work with
neighborhood groups and on local boards and commissions.

3. Concentration in Transportation Studies
This concentration focuses on areas of transportation that are critical to
Louisiana and to the field of transportation in general; with local, national and
international applications. With one in every eight jobs in the State of Louisiana
involved in the area of transportation, a basic understanding of the topic is
imperative. The New Orleans area economy is heavily dependent on maritime
transportation and despite the large number of employment opportunities in
the metropolitan area, very few educational offerings within Louisiana are
related to these opportunities. These courses will provide you with the
background needed to be competitive in this ever important and ever growing
sector of our economy.
