106643 Environmental Destruction Imagine a world where it is not possible to light a room, heat a home, drive a car, or even breathe freely. It would be like going backwards in time, only 100 years in the future. The use of fossil fuels today is leading to an unpromising tomorrow. Fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas have been abused so greatly over the past century that the environment is slowly being destroyed and the sources of these fossil fuels are dwindling down. A person fills up the gas tank in his or her car, pays the electrical bill, and takes big deep breaths of fresh air without thinking twice. But what happens when these fossil fuels run out for upcoming generations because we, the people of today, abused them and did not prepare for the future? Not protecting the environment by using an immense amount of fossil fuel is an environmental ethical violation that will harm the people of the future. Not only is the human population using up all the oil, coal and natural gas, but we are also destroying the environment. This huge ethical violation is going to cause people in the future to have shorter, unhealthy lives. Because of the excessive amounts of fossil fuels used today, the air will be polluted and possibly cause death by inhaling the toxic air. The casualties would be our children and grandchildren that we are putting into danger by abusing fossil fuels like we do. At this time, in this century, we know what fossil fuels are doing to the environment; yet, we still continue to use them without really finding an alternative solution. Not doing everything in our power as an intelligent country to save the environment is immoral and unethical. I would not call myself an environmentalist, but I do care about the environment and I want to do everything I can to protect it for future generations. All the greenhouse gases being emitted by fossil fuels are slowly but surely polluting the environment and causing global 106643 warming. To be honest, global warming terrifies me. Movies such as, “The Day After Tomorrow” show me—in an extreme way—what could possibly happen if we do not protect our earth. As citizens of the United States and of the world, we need to do our part to help save the environment and save future lives from polluted airs. In order to do so, we need to carpool more often, recycle always, and save electricity. I know I will follow these guidelines in order to protect the earth for future generations, and hope others will follow in my footsteps. Although fossil fuels are destroying our air and environment, society is taught nothing different but to use them. Driving gas guzzling trucks is thought of as “cool”, not thought of as destruction to the earth. We tolerate polluting the environment because there is no other way to carry on daily tasks without using fossil fuels. Not justifying that harming the environment is acceptable, but we are not given the tools to carry on tasks like turning on a light without harmful fossil fuels. As a nation, there needs to be funding for research in order to find new energy sources, better for the environment and more reliable, so that these fossil fuels can once and for all vanish from use. There needs to be change; changes so that we cannot only hope, but know that our loved ones in the future will be protected from polluted airs and global warming.
