FOSSIL FUELS Are they destroying the environment? by Mohamed Abd el Rahman and David Tran Outline What are Fossil Fuels? How are they used? Do they affect the environment? Does this affect humans? Global Warming What are the solutions? How can you help? Conclusion What are Fossil Fuels? Formed from remains of dead plants and animals Takes millions of years to form Examples - oil, natural gas, coal How are they used? Fossil fuels are used in many daily things. Coal Petroleum Electricity, heat fuel for vehicles Natural gas is used for stoves, ovens, and water heaters. Do they affect the environment? The burning fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide emissions Emissions increase global warming, negatively impact the climate Does this affect humans? Fossil fuels, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides causes acid rain. Acid rain affects the soil Kills many species Releases toxins that cause illness Global Warming Global warming increasing of earth’s average temperature Leads to higher sea level due to the melting of the ice caps Causes many floods world wide What are the solutions? Hybrid cars use other sources of energy besides fossil fuels other naturally produced sources of energy: plants such as corn and sugar cane Many countries agree to limit their carbon dioxide emissions How can you help? Not wasting electricity lessens Limiting the use of air conditioning Riding your bike or walking Conclusion Fossils fuels produce carbon dioxide emissions Leads to global warming and acid rains Solutions include alternative forms of energy Cut down the use of fossil fuels Sources www.energyquest.ca.gov www.policyalmanac.org www.epa.gov Rudi Volti (2004) Cars and Culture, Greenwood Press, Westport, Connecticut.
