“I expect what a boss would expect from you.”
Class Rules
1.
Be here, be on time, and be prepared by having your journal in class daily.
2.
Be a self-starter, work and follow instructions when they are given.
3.
Treat yourself, others and property respectfully.
4.
Turn in your work on time.
5.
Follow all safety and school rules.
6.
Take pride in your work and don’t cheat.
7.
When your work is done, be productive: read, create, clean, assist.
Reward for following the rules:
The lowest non-test grade will be changed to an A if ….
 …the student must not have more than 5 absences. (3 for ½ credit class)
 …the student must not have an office referral.
 …the student cannot have a zero assignment.
Consequences for breaking the rules:
1st offense: warning, redirection
2nd offense: redirection and student can be removed from the distraction, consultation
between student and teacher, or loss of participation points
3 rd offense: student can be sent to the office, a phone call can be made to the parent, a
detention given, loss of participation points, and/or the student removed from the
classroom (AEP) as defined in the school discipline code
Serious Offense: Any student who breaks the rules in severe way as viewed by the
teacher can skip the first two levels of consequences and go straight to the office
My goal as a teacher is to create an environment that keeps the students busy and
active so that they will not have time to break the rules. I have these rules so that
everyone can learn. I believe my students are smart, creative kids. I want all of them
to do well and succeed!
Course Syllabus p. 2
Personal Supplies Needed for Class
1. Art Fee (This will be billed through the school office on August 15.)
2. Three-ring 1” binder with loose-leaf notebook paper. (This is to be brought to
class daily.)
3. Students may need some minor supplies and materials from home for specific
projects throughout the class. Most of the supplies will be provided through their
art fee.
Classroom Procedures
When entering the classroom:
1. Place personal items, purses, books, jackets, etc. on the community tables
provided. The only things that students are to have at their seat are their
binder, their person and supplies for this class only.
2. Copy the class expectations or any notes from the screen for the daily entry.
3. Follow any directions on the screen. If a student has been absent, they will ask a
table partner for notes from the previous day or they can check the internet site.
4. Once attendance has been taken, students may question teacher for clarity or
problems with homework assignments will be addressed. Students who have been
absent can get assistance then.
5. The rest of the class period will consist of learning, exploring, and creating.
6. The teacher will announce when it is time to clean up. Students will clean up their
supplies, wipe down their tables and throw away any garbage.
7. After the areas are cleaned an items put in appropriate places, students will be
instructed to get their personal belongings and sit at their seat to be dismissed by
the teacher.
Classroom Procedures (By Topic)
Absent Students: It is the student’s responsibility to make-up work or to find out about
make-up work. Students who miss tests will have to make them up within the school
allotted time or they will take a zero. Students who have missed work days will have to
make up the lost time as homework or afterschool.
Bathroom/locker privileges: Students must sign out. Each student is allowed 1-2
bathroom leaves, another beyond that and the student will denied privileges. Always sign
in and out or privileges will be revoked. Go before and after class.
Course Syllabus p. 3
Cell Phones: Occasionally we will use a cell phone for educational purposes, but this is
only after instruction or permission has been granted. At anytime if you have a cell
phone out or you are texting in the classroom, you are in violation of school policy
and your phone will be taken and turned over to the high school office. NO
EXCEPTIONS.
Using my class time for another class: The time you are in my class is to be used to
complete my class. If you complete all your work for me, then you should work on
improving your art skills. Do not ask me to leave my classroom to go to another
classroom.
Talking during class: Students are to be quiet and attentive while anyone is addressing
the class or when announcements are being made. Projects allow for students to speak to
their tablemates while they are working, and this is permitted.
Work during class: Students will be given very little homework in my class, if they use
class time wisely. Students are expected to work while in the classroom.
Food and Drink: No meal trays or lunch boxes are allowed, but students may have snack
foods and drink at their work tables unless we are working with chemicals or other
hazardous materials. When your food is a distraction, you will not be allowed to bring it
anymore.
LEAVING THE CLASSROOM AT THE END OF THE PERIOD:
Students are not to leave the classroom until:
 their area is clean
 their supplies are put away
 their work is put in its proper place
 they have been dismissed by the teacher
 their chair is pushed in to the table

Course Work / Grading
The student’s quarter grades will be totaled using the following formula:
25 %
Daily Exercises, Critiques and Participation
25%
Journal Entries
50%
Projects and Written Tests
100%
Quarter Grade
Art is subjective, and talent is something that is developed over time. For these two
reasons, the grading of artwork will be based on I.D.E.A.S. rubric.
I.D.E.A.S.
I – Idea – The student will demonstrate an understanding of the core content being taught
through acquired and natural skills. (25%)
D- Design (Technique) – The student will show creativity in the use of elements of art
and the principles of design, and composition. (25%)
E- Effort – The student will be graded on the effort put into their work. If a student is
given two days to work on a project in class, then I expect them to put three
hours of work into the project. (25%)
A-Attitude & Application – The student will be graded on the attitude in preparing the
project and during instruction, while participating in class, speaking
appropriately, cooperating with others, having appropriate school behavior,
following directions, treating others with respect, and cleaning-up. Student is to
use appropriate application of media and materials. (25%)
S- Scheduling: If an assignment is late one day, the student will lose 25% of their grade.
The second day late the student loses 50% of their grade. Work will be counted
as a zero on the third day late.
Grade Scale: A 90-100
B 80-89
C 70-79
D 60-69
F 50-59
Make-up Work: Students who have an excused absence will get two days
for the first day missed and one day for every day that follows. Unexcused
absences will be treated as late work. Missed work days result in student
homework. It is the student’s responsibility to find out what they missed. If
a student is absent on the day a project/assignment is due or a test is to
be done, then it is to be completed on the day of their return, provided
that the student is aware of the assignment.
