New Marketing Program Curriculum Proposals
October 2007
The following SOBA proposals are driven by the intention to offer a new BA degree in Marketing. The
rationale behind this degree program is as follows:
Since 1998 there has been a steady increase in declared Business Administration majors with an
option in marketing. In the past 10 years the number of marketing option students has
increased from 73 to as high as 138 (over 120 for each of the past five years) while graduates
have increased from 20 to as high as 36 per year(average of 30.6 in last five years). A second
key indicator is the ratio of graduates to major/option which is currently 23%. Marketing clearly
meets the CDHE goal for a major of having over 10 graduates per year in a major.
SOBA feels it will be beneficial to our students seeking employment if our Marketing majors
graduate with a specified “Marketing” degree (as offered at most other business schools) rather
than a “Business Administration – Marketing option” degree
A key rationale of this change is to increase student’s breath of knowledge by going from four
credits in electives to nine credits. Nine hours allows more flexibility to arrange our electives in
two groups: Marketing Management and Experiential and Focused Topics. Several of the
present 4 credit hours courses are being redesigned into 3 credit hour offerings. Options in the
Business Administration are many so with this change marketing is positioned with the added
electives to designate different tracks clearly within the marketing field.
All marketing courses under the BA prefix will change to the MK prefix
