School of Business Administration New Marketing Program Curriculum Proposals October 2007 The following SOBA proposals are driven by the intention to offer a new BA degree in Marketing. The rationale behind this degree program is as follows: Since 1998 there has been a steady increase in declared Business Administration majors with an option in marketing. In the past 10 years the number of marketing option students has increased from 73 to as high as 138 (over 120 for each of the past five years) while graduates have increased from 20 to as high as 36 per year(average of 30.6 in last five years). A second key indicator is the ratio of graduates to major/option which is currently 23%. Marketing clearly meets the CDHE goal for a major of having over 10 graduates per year in a major. SOBA feels it will be beneficial to our students seeking employment if our Marketing majors graduate with a specified “Marketing” degree (as offered at most other business schools) rather than a “Business Administration – Marketing option” degree A key rationale of this change is to increase student’s breath of knowledge by going from four credits in electives to nine credits. Nine hours allows more flexibility to arrange our electives in two groups: Marketing Management and Experiential and Focused Topics. Several of the present 4 credit hours courses are being redesigned into 3 credit hour offerings. Options in the Business Administration are many so with this change marketing is positioned with the added electives to designate different tracks clearly within the marketing field. All marketing courses under the BA prefix will change to the MK prefix Proposals directly related to the new Marketing Major Program Proposal – Marketing – Bachelors of Arts Degree in Marketing [1] Gen Ed 39 Major Requirements Common SOBA Requirements: Acc 225 Introduction to Financial Accounting Acc 226 Introduction to Managerial Accounting Econ 262 Principles of Economics-Micro Econ 272 Principles of Economics-Macro MK 350 Marketing BA 253 Business Statistics BA 260 Legal Environment of Business 4 4 3 3 4 4 3 BA 301 BA 353 BA 380 BA 496 Management and Org Behavior Operations Management Financial Management Senior Seminar in Strategic Management Subtotal Auxiliary Requirements (CSIS 322) Quantitative reasoning is satisfied by taking MK 486 Other Departmental Requirements Required MK 385 Consumer Behavior MK 486 Marketing Research MK 488 Marketing Strategy and Policy ECON Upper Division Economics Subtotal Marketing Management Electives I (minimum of 6 credit hours) MK 366 Topics in Marketing MK 370 Selling and Sales Promotion MK 371 Advertising & Public Relations MK 372 Retailing MK 374 Global Marketing MK 376 Managing Customer Value MK 378 Services Marketing MK 470 Innovation, Design&Development Subtotal 4 4 4 4 41 4 3 4 4 4 15 1-3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 6 Experiential and Focused Topics Electives II (minimum of 3 credit hours) BA 437 Internship in Bus - Marketing Related 3 MK 260 Business Creativity&Innovation 2 MK 360 Sports Marketing 3 MK 362 Marketing in the Cruise Industry 3 MK 364 Business of Gaming 4 MK 368 Research Topics-Marketing 1-3 MK 460 Applied Marketing Projects 1-3 MK 462 Seminar in Marketing 1-3 Subtotal Subtotal before free electives Free electives Total for graduation 3-4 108-109 11-12 120 New Minor in Marketing [2] - Set up in similar manner to new Major in Marketing (delete BA – Minor in Marketing) Requirements for a Minor in Marketing Required: MK 350 Marketing* 4 MK 385 Consumer Behavior 3 MK 488 Marketing Strategy 4 Marketing Management minimum of 6 credit hours MK 366 Topics in Marketing 1-3 MK 370 Selling and Sales Promotion 3 MK 371 Advertising and PR 3 MK 372 Retailing 3 MK 374 Global Marketing 3 MK 376 Managing Customer Value 3 MK 378 Services Marketing 3 MK 470 Innovation, Design and Development 3 MK 486 Marketing Research 4 Experiential and Focused Topics minimum of 3 credit hours MK 260 Business Creativity and Innovation 2 MK 360 Sports Marketing 3 MK 362 Mktg in the Cruise Industry 3 MK 364 Business of Gaming 4 MK 460 Applied Marketing Projects 1 to 3 MK 462 Seminar in Marketing 1 to 3 Total Credit Hours 20-21 * Prerequisites for MK 350 are (BA 103 or ACC 225) and (ECON 262 or ECON 272) New Courses for Marketing Major MK 260 – Business Creativity & Innovation [3] (BA 240 will be deleted) MK 350 – Marketing [4] (BA 340 will be deleted) MK 360 – Sports Marketing [5] (BA 338 will be deleted) MK 362 – Marketing in the Cruise Industry [6] (previous BA 390) MK 364 – Business of Gaming [7] (BA 356 will be deleted) MK 366 – Topics in Marketing [8] (new course) MK 368 – Research Topics – Marketing [9] (new course) MK 370 – Selling and Sales Promotion [10] (BA 339 will be deleted) MK 371 – Advertising and Public Relations [11] (BA 344 and BA 348 will be deleted) MK 372 – Retailing [12] (BA 342 will be deleted) MK 374 – Global Marketing [13] (new course) MK 376 – Managing Customer Value [14] (BA 346 will be deleted) MK 378 – Services Marketing [15] (BA 439 will be deleted) MK 385 – Consumer Behavior [16] (BA 347 will be deleted) MK 460 – Applied Marketing Projects [17] (new course) MK 462 – Seminar in Marketing [18] (new course) MK 470 – Innovation, Design &Development [19] (new course) MK 486 – Marketing Research [20] (BA 446 will be deleted) MK 488 – Marketing Strategy and Policy [21] (BA 445 will be deleted) Deletion of BA courses – [22] per above
