(Back to Top) EWC Student Orientation The East-West Center’s Education Program held the annual Orientation Program for 159 incoming degree students and Asia Pacific Leadership Program participants in August. The incoming participants learned about Hawaii and Hawaiian culture, familiarized themselves with the East-West Center Campus, and got to know one another. The total number of new and continuing students will be approximately 500 during the next academic year. The Associates Office and alumni were also a part of this exciting time to welcome new students. The Associates Office hosted a welcome pizza lunch on August 13 for all of the new students (that’s 40 large pizzas!) where new participants had the opportunity to mingle with staff of the Associates Office and EWC alumni. The Friends of the East-West Center and the EWCA Hawaii Chapter also teamed up to put on their annual Household Goods Bazaar, gathering lots of donations and selling items cheap to accommodate the new graduate degree students and APLP participants. All proceeds were turned over to the East-West Center Participants Association (EWCPA) for future activities. To help close out the orientation activities, the Hawaii Chapter also hosted their annual Alumni Picnic at Kapi’olani Park on Saturday, August 23. Over 150 alumni, students, and their families were invited to enjoy a day at the park. On Tuesday, August 19th, there was an orientation session to introduce local activities to the new students at Hale Halawai and the Friendship Circle. The activities included introductions to lei making, Pidgin English lessons, recycling in Hawaii, food tasting (malasadas & ahi poke), hula and ukulele, surfing and other water activities. Photos from the session were featured on the front page of the Star Bulletin on August 20, 2008. To see photos of this event click here.
