JOB DESCRIPTION: ALUMNI INSTRUCTOR

2014 YES DC ORIENTATION

Purpose of Position: To assist the Orientation Teacher in preparing YES participants for their exchange experience using materials provided by American Councils/DC administrative staff; to plan orientation sessions together with the DC orientation team; to teach YES students in English about American culture and family life, and the program expectations for YES participants; to facilitate the arrival to and departure from Washington Dulles International Airport of large groups of YES students.

Description of Duties:

 Learn the established goals and objectives of the YES program and its pre-departure orientation materials;

 Attend the entire training workshop at the beginning of August in Washington, DC and become thoroughly familiar with assigned lesson plans;

 Co-teach orientation sessions with an American teacher;

 Assist orientation teachers by acting as a cross-cultural resource and role model for students;

 Conduct Alumni-led sessions of the DC Orientation, as assigned;

 During non-classroom hours, be a supportive listener and positive role model for students;

 Maintain program integrity at all times by enforcing organizational rules and regulations;

 Be involved in airport arrival and departure logistics for incoming and departing YES students.

Reports to: Orientation Teacher; YES DC Orientations Coordinator

Qualifications:

 Alumna/us of the YES program who successfully completed their program with no extensive onprogram issues. Only students who participated on the program between (and including) the 2009-

2010 and 2011-2012 academic years, and who will be between the ages of 18 and 20 at the time of the orientation are eligible to apply;

 Comfortable with large numbers of teenagers and able to relate to their anxieties while acting as an authority figure;

 Demonstrated ability to deal with unpredictable situations;

 Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to function with staff of different ages and cultural backgrounds;

 Available to attend training conference in Washington, DC at the beginning of August, and teach at 4 orientation cycles from August 5 through August 29. Orientation sessions run weekly, from Tuesday until Friday.

 Note: This position often involves early morning or late evening hours, especially during travel days.

Alumni instructors should be prepared to assist in unanticipated situations in consultation with orientation staff.
