James Giles School Summer Reading for All! Dear Future Sixth Grade Parents and Students, James Giles School is implementing a program called, “Summer Reading for All.” Through this program, it is our expectation that EVERY child enrolled at Giles School will read a MINIMUM of two books over the summer months, Below is a list of books that have been chosen by grade level teachers and recommended by the Children’s Librarian at Eisenhower Public Library. Please work with your child in choosing a minimum of two book titles below to read over the summer months. Upon your child’s return to school in August, he/she will be given a choice of activities to complete. These activities will be used in order to assess your child’s understanding of the books read. All students will be required to complete two activities (one for each book), and these activities will be graded and entered in our Power School grade book. For your convenience, Eisenhower Public Library has added copies of each book, available for checkout. The importance of summer reading has been documented repeatedly in a variety of research studies. Over and over again, it has been shown that children, who read during the summer, do much better when school begins again in the fall. Children who do not read during the summer are likely to lose crucial ground in the area of reading. While reading may be the farthest thing from most children’s minds, we encourage you to understand how important reading over the summer months is to the academic success of your child. Thank you for your attention to this important matter and enjoy your summer!
