Walter Sisulu University is a multi-campus, comprehensive university, with its seat at its Nelson Mandela Drive campus in Mthatha. The university has four campuses in Mthatha, Butterworth, Buffalo City and Queenstown, which are headed by Campus Rectors. The Campus Rector is a newly created position and a vacancy exists for five-year contract position, which is located at Buffalo City Campus and reports to the Vice Chancellor and Principal of the university. CAMPUS RECTOR – BUFFALO CITY CAMPUS WSU has adopted a Divisional Management System, which means that it will be run as a unitary institution with four campuses. The latter will be operated as business units of the same institution with the Campus Rector as the academic and administrative head responsible for the promotion of quality education, research and community engagement and the provision of academic and administrative leadership at a campus level. As member of the Institutional Management Committee s/he has a very strategic role to play and at Campus level will be responsible for rolling out the divisional management system as the Chair of the Campus Management Committee. S/he will further take full responsibility for the development of a vibrant academic culture at campus level, in support of the university reaching its strategic objectives as a leading comprehensive university, both regionally and nationally. The incumbent will furthermore be responsible for the key performance areas listed below: Key Performance Areas: Strategy development and execution at campus level that supports the implementation of the WSU mission, vision, values and strategic priorities. Establish an enabling environment at campus level, with state of the art facilities and equipment to support the academic portfolio. Operations management for the following portfolios at campus level: o Teaching and learning o Research o Community engagement o Library and information services o Corporate affairs o Student administration and governance o Student affairs o Human resources o Finance o Support services (ICT infrastructure and support, Facilities, etc.) Quality assurance and risk management. SHE Management (section 16 (2) responsibilities assigned by OHS Act). Policy and procedure development and implementation aligned to the WSU mission, vision, values and strategic objectives. Lead and inspire staff and provide clear direction through a period of transition. Manage transformation to ensure the internalization of an organisational and performance culture that supports the strategic imperatives of WSU. Stakeholder relations management and partnerships. Performance management, including academic staff learning and development. Budget/financial and asset management. Monitoring, evaluation and reporting. Minimum requirements: A Doctoral degree. An outstanding academic with an established research track record and at least 5 years’ experience in a senior leadership role in the university. Has a track record for managing a complex portfolio, running a unit of a reasonable size. Has the ability to mobilize and inspire others towards shared goals. Excellent people and communication skills. The ability to maintain and strengthen synergies amongst the different campuses in the interest of the unity of the institution. Understands the operations and affairs of a university environment. Can think strategically and operationalise this into plans and projects. A good understanding and experience in change management implementation; Computer skills (MS Office suite).
