EDMONDS SCHOOL DISTRICT Terrace Park Elementary th 5409 228 St SW, Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043 Mary C. Freitas Principal Betsy McGregor Assistant Principal Includes Brier, Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, and Woodway August 2014 Dear Terrace Park Families, Greetings! I’m delighted to welcome you to Terrace Park School! I hope that you have enjoyed your summer and that you’re ready for the 2014 – 2015 school year. We’ve been busy hiring staff for the upcoming year. Please join me in welcoming Ms. Ashley Biermann (Music), Ms. Michelle Gurnee (PM Kindergarten), Ms. Amy Scholl (5th grade Neighborhood), Ms. Christina Reynolds (Paraeducator) , and Melissa Falleroni (Counseling Intern) to our staff for the 2014 – 2015 school year. Our teachers and staff are working hard to get ready and their excitement is building as we approach September. I want to remind you of the following: Wednesday, September 3rd – is the first day of school! Students arrive and go to the classroom at 8:50 A.M. The tardy bell rings at 9:00 A.M. - Students will be considered on time if they are in their classroom at 9:00 A.M. Dismissal is at 3:30 P.M. Breakfast is served beginning at 8:30 A.M. Only students eating breakfast should arrive before 8:50 A.M. Students arriving before 8:50 A.M. will line up in the Gym (K-3rd grade) or Commons (4th – 6th grade). You and your student(s) are invited to a Back to School Open House on Tuesday, September 2nd, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. The purpose of the open house is to meet the teacher and see friends. (If you would like to schedule a meeting to specifically address your child, please call the office.) Parents and students can meet teachers in their classroom 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. You may bring school supplies, immunization records, and any medications to the office. Please deposit your child’s school supplies in the classroom; be sure your child’s supplies are labeled with their first and last name. Terrace Park PTA will have a general meeting at 1:45 p.m. and a social at 3:00 p.m. All staff and families will move to the PTA event at 3:00 p.m. ALL CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENTS ARE TENTATIVE UNTIL AFTER THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL. As you know, the Terrace Park staff takes the placement of children into their classrooms very seriously. We invite parent input each spring. The placement of each and every Terrace Park student is a team process. We take many factors into consideration: academic skills, needs, learning styles, socialemotional needs, gender balance, leadership abilities, special education needs, classroom enrollment numbers, and parent input. We strive to create balanced classrooms. After consideration by the Terrace Park staff and with parent input, your child’s tentative classroom assignment will be available on Skyward Family Access on Friday, August 29th, emailed in a welcome letter from your student’s new teacher, and posted in the Terrace Park School foyer. I am confident that this placement will help your child grow and learn. It is important that our students come to believe that they can learn with any teacher and in any classroom. Occasionally, a placement seems like it may not be a good fit. We have a process for reviewing legitimate classroom placement issues. Parents may pick up the form for reviewing a classroom placement from the Terrace Park office, or web site. Any changes in the placement of a student, if granted through this review process, will not take place until after the enrollment count during the first few weeks of school. Applications for free and reduced lunch are available in the school office, online and by calling the Districts Food Service office at 425-431-7077. New applications must be filled out and submitted every year. Be sure to complete the form and return it to the school office as soon as possible. There are no IOU’s, so please pack a lunch for your child until you get confirmation from Food Service that your family is eligible for free or reduced lunch fees. Students that received free or reduced lunch last school year are still eligible through September based on last year’s application. School supply lists are posted on our school website, and are available in the school office. Please sign up for Terrace Park’s Parent Email List if you have not been receiving emails from us! Just send an email to our Office Manager Becky Cass at: CassB@edmonds.wednet.edu and put “email list” in the subject line. Please include your child’s first and last name and classroom teacher.
